The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about scientology is: what the fuck?
Does anyone here know of logical reasons that may make this "religion" believable, and are there any scientologists on here?
I'm not overly religious and I'm aware that every religion has some pretty silly stories that come with them, but this seems to take the cake for me. Scientology could have made a decent movie and was basicaly a few science fiction books, but as a religion I'm just a bit baffled.
I was told that on his deathbed L. Ron Hubbard said that Scientology was a joke he made up, can anyone confirm or dispell this rumour?
I have a hard time accepting any religion as viable if Charles Manson has deemed it to be "too crazy".

That's what I thought. I might take a course just for shits and giggles, and there will be plenty of those.
I didn't want to offend members that may take it seriously by calling it a cult, but it really is. I think a religion based off of star wars would be more believable.

Oh good god.
What the fuck is wrong with our world? Some Scientologists are well educated people, how on earth do they believe this shit?
Maybe they will go all Jonestown on our asses and do everyone a favor. I'll even supply the Kool-Aid: Cyan-aid.

If they actually followed some of this instead of causing mass confusion and bad press it probably wouldn't be that bad. But "Psychiatry and psychology are destructive and abusive practices." Really? Minus that I'd probably be all for it.

Prime among Scientology's beliefs is "that man is a spiritual being whose existence spans more than one life and who is endowed with abilities well beyond those which he normally considers he possesses."[48] Scientology believes man to be basically good, that his experiences have led him into evil, that he errs because he seeks to solve his problems by considering only his own point of view, and that man can improve to the degree he preserves his spiritual integrity and remains honest and decent.[49] According to the Church, the ultimate goal is: "a civilization without insanity, without criminals and without war, where the able can prosper and honest beings can have rights, and where man is free to rise to greater heights."[50]
The Church of Scientology declares that the goal of Scientology is to achieve "certainty of one’s spiritual existence and [of] one’s relationship to the Supreme Being,"[51] and says that Scientology's tenets are not a matter of faith but of testable practice: "That which is true for you is what you have observed to be true."[52]
The exact nature of all of existence is said to be stated in Hubbard's Scientology and Dianetics Axioms.
Other beliefs of Scientology are:[53]
A person is an immortal spiritual being (termed a thetan) who possesses a mind and a body.
The thetan has lived through many past lives and will continue to live beyond the death of the body.
Through the Scientology process of "auditing," people can free themselves of traumatic incidents, ethical transgressions and bad decisions which are said to collectively restrict the person from reaching the state of "Clear" and "Operating Thetan." Each state is said to represent the recovery of native spiritual abilities and to confer mental and physical benefits.
A person is basically good, but becomes "aberrated" by moments of pain and unconsciousness.
Psychiatry and psychology are destructive and abusive practices.[54] |

I spent a whole night researching it once. I thought after one paper "there's no way this can get more unbelievable", 5+ hours and 24+ papers and pages later they were still making it more and more unbelievable.
You also need a lot of $$$ to take those courses. Good thing most of it can be read on the internet for free, or at least some of the cliff notes.

Watch the Metalacolypse episode "Religionklok", Murderface sums religion up pretty well towards the end in my opinion. Also the Riot between the Agnostics and the Atheists is freakin hilarious.

Scientology is for Hollywood. Hollywood has money. Scientology is bunk. Hollywood is bunk. Therefore, Scientology is Hollywood.

L.Ron Hubbard was a racist ass, and if you read some of the original things he wrote in his papers used to make scientology, as opposed to the rewrite they use now, it is sickening, on top of that the way they treat women is horrific, read what the wedding vows are, terrible. Definately a cult.

Honestly, what makes it different from other religions? All of them contain magical stories to preach a message that is ignored by 90% of their followers, who only say they follow that religion so that they'll fit in to their society. As long as they're not shooting civilians or something, let them do whatever the fuck they want.

The difference being that you have to pay to join. If you want to advance passed a certain "thetan" level, the only way of doing so is by paying 100,000$, making it a cult and not really a religion.
Sure there are some whacky stories in other religions, but none of them involve the emperor of the Galaxy named Xenu who took a number of his people, put them down on earth, blew up some volcanoes killing them, unleashing negative energy on the world and havign these aliens inhabit the bodies of early humans until now where the only way to be happy since these negative alien souls are in us all, is to pay to join the religion of Scientology.

Scientologists also have a religious edict that states that anything that impedes their quack philosophy must be opposed with any means necessary, without regards to legality or base human decency.
You've heard of the incident where they infiltrated the government correct?

Yeah, Operation whatever. I'm talking about the tenets of their faith. I've read up all of the different things they've done, where they neglected that woman, seperated families and all of that, and they should have tax exemption taken away for charging their members. I agree that a lot of the crap they practice should be prosecuted within the law. It's when people make fun of their belief in thetans, xenus, and volcanoes where it's just plain hypocrisy and dogs me.

Really? you have to invest in Scientology to be part of the religion? That's BS. You shouldn't have to pay for faith because last time I checked it was free.
