Also Jeebus, while I understand what you mean, I think most of the time people do use "gay" to symbolize "homosexual" and therefore "not the norm and something that needs to unfuck itself."

I think that people need to back up the PC train. It reminds me of the whole "r-word" campaign. We had a big assembly in my school about that campaign. The entirety of it was complete bullshit, but the best moment was when one of the teachers said "If you use the r-word, then you're an idiot". The room was so thick with irony that I almost choked to death.

Exactly. But the real kicker is that the word "retard" replaced many other words that were used to refer to the mentally handicapped, and then later considered derogatory and done away with. One of these words is "idiot". It's like saying "If you use the word hobo, then you're a bum".
