So...somebody fill me in on this? Was it an up-to-date graphically and such version of the first Castlevania screen for screen? Was it just as hard if not harder?

If its harder, I'd rather not bother with it for VC, I just spent the last hour and a half trying to kill Dracula and I can barely get past the first form! and I thought the previous level was hard.

So yea, what's the deal on this game?

There are a lot of what if's in life Donny. What if I hit you really hard in the face, knocked yo shit to the back of yo skull? What if I....had you girl gargle my nuts? The fact remains, you are a fuckin mutant.

I never understood why the called it a remake, it's completely different. I consider it canon personally. Super Castlevania IV is my favorite Castlevania game, it has great music too. Definately play it.

I thought it was really well done. It was a great SNES game and if you have the console you should definitely buy it.

Overall I think it's one of the easier Castlevania's but when they expand your basic weapon abilities that's what happens Smile

I own Castlevania I - IV, and I find IV to be the easiest also, for the reason that Ghandi says. It is totally worth owning. The graphics are neat and the challenge is still there. As mentioned, great music too.

Castlevania II is easier in my opinion if you know what your doing/where your going. But out of 1,3 and 4 yea Super Castlevania is easiest.

I haven't played Castlevania IV in a really long time so all I really remember is that part in level 4 where you're in that rotating tunnel...the graphics kick ass, I remember that.

Super Castlevania IV is a complete reimagining/retelling of the original game. What this means is that the game's levels and bosses are completely new, but the storyline is the same. This according to Konami's official canon. Simon Belmont only fought Dracula twice, once in Castlevania and once in Castlevania 2. Every other game he's in a reimagining of Castlevania 1. Not to mention, of course, that Castlevania I is a reimagining of an MSX game.

I thought though that Dracula X was a redo of Rondo of Blood

Dracula X for the SNES is a port of the PC engine Rondo of Blood. Rondo in almost every way is superior to the Dracula X Snes. If you're willing to poke around on the forums on http://snesorama.us you can track down a pc-port someone made of the original Rondo.

Also Syd, you're wrong about Castlevania 1 being a re imagining of an MSX game. It's the other way around. Vampire Killer (MSX) is a re-imagining of the NES original because it had to be adapted for the MSX hardware because the MSX didn't allow for smooth scrolling. It was switched to screen-to-screen scrolling like in the original Zelda. Konami also did this for the MSX port of Contra.

My favorite part though of Super Castlevania IV is the whip swinging like a grappling hook

Screen-to-screen Contra does not sound like my idea of fun

The MSX version doesn't even deserve to be called Contra, it's like a completely different fucking game.

Yeah. Most of the weapons have been changed, and you run alot slower. You have a lifebar and there are no more alien bosses.

I think we had this discussion before. Castlevania came out September 26, 1986. Vampire Killer came out October 30, 1986. Given the close proximity of the release dates, it is obvious the games were developed concurrently, so neither can really be considered the first game. But given that Konami was a HUGE supporter of the MSX, it is likely that MSX version went into development first. Of course, that's just speculation.

As for Contra, the 1988 NES and 1989 MSX versions were BOTH adaptations of the 1987 arcade game.

Actually, Konami's first priority was developing for the Famicom, because at the time having a production deal with Nintendo was a huge thing. It wasn't until Castlevania went into development that Konami optioned it to be developed for the MSX, using the flip-screen system later to port Contra to the MSX2.

Is there a source on that? I can tell you for sure that Konami was developing games for the MSX before the NES even existed, and that Metal Gear was specifically designed for the MSX, then ported to the NES. Looking at its release history, Konami seemed to be more interested in software development than making cartridge-based games. They cranked out a compartively large number of FDS games. Also, 1987 was the first year Konami produced more NES/Famicom games than MSX games.

Castlevania was developed for the FDS before it was developed for the MSX, because at the time Konami was experimenting with the new hardware.

I own an original copy of Super Castlevania IV. Good game, definitely easier than the original.

Holy Water is so powerful in the first game. Obviously, the question is where does he keep all those bottles?

Loved this game 'cause of the 8-way whipping.

Fantastic game. I thought it looked a bit washed out the first time I played it, but it has some excellent visuals.

The final fight with dracula was underwhelming though.
