I find myself starting at my SNES every night wishing that a new Final Fantasy game would come out.

However, in my mind, I am hoping for a game that is similar to FFIV and FFVI.

Yet when I try to put it into words, I find myself having a hard time explaining what it was about those older games with comparably worse graphics that made me enjoy them so much more.

So here are some things that I wish existed in a new Final Fantasy game.

  • Guys who look like guys
  • Characters with specific classes
  • Limited futuristic type weapons. This means few, if any, guns. Certainly no gun-swords.
  • More western influence in the look of the game
  • No emo heroes
  • Evil bad guys, really evil, not confused or angry, but evil
  • No bird breeding
  • No complex magic systems. Magic should just exist for classes that can use it. No espers, no weapon slots for magic, no other magic gimmicks.

What would you want to see in a new game?

I was a late comer to the FF franchise, and so the only ones I've played were 7-9.

I agree with your gripes, though. I liked the fact that 9 had at least somewhat of a class system, whereas in 7 and 8 the characters were virtually interchangeble.

I also prefered the medevial tone of 9, rather than the futuristic tone of the other two.

The feminine male characters really need to go, too. I'm not suggesting that every male character should have a Conan-like physique, and I know that strong, powerful heroes have been done to death in games and fairytales before now, but I think we've strayed too far in the opposite direction.

I could also do without all the weird, bizarre Japanese shit in games. (Cait Sith, the Moogles, Quina and Chu-Chu from Xenogears.)

Dear Japan,

Please cut out the Japanese shit. Thanks.

I hear what you are saying with some of this stuff, but a. characters are not interchangeable in 7, they have different stats and abilities, and b. I don't like cutesy stuff, but moogles are an old part of the franchise and at face value mog the moogle from FF3 is arguable the best character in the whole game.

I don't think I am going to like FF13, but there is a chance. The series has completely changed in the last 10 years, and I think that FF tactics was the last good final fantasy game.

I didn't think the characters in FFVII were that much different from each other. Aside from a few obvious differences (Aeris's limit break being a healer rather than an attack) the rest of the characters seemed to be about on par with each other. On my usual team of Cloud, Tifa and Barrett, they were all pretty much equal.

It wasn't like FFIX, where Vivi could cast black magic like no one's business, and Steiner could bring the pain with his broadsword.

As I said before, I'm not super-knowledgeble about FF history, so I'll take your word about what you said about the moogles.

The "Holy Trinity" approach to a class system may seem overdone, but it allows for a dynamic team rather than undefined characters who don't really need to work together.

Please don't confuse my argument with the common MMO version of the same gripe.

FFIV as an example:

Cecil: Tank
Rydia: Damage
Rosa: Healing

Other characters with mixed abilities were cool, but that core component was what made a party work together and made the combat in the game feel a bit chess-like as far as choices are concerned rather than just hit the attack button.

I want to care if a player dies and well beyond the fact that their HP is gone from a pool. I want to care because they were a key portion of the team and without them shit hits the fan.

I don't like FF VII much but I must say that the "Materia system" really appreciable. Just because it's a synthesis (I'm not sure if this word is used in English the way we do in Turkish, anyway) of the modern ages which nobody is "special"---people can only use the special abilities with the special items. This gives the player a lot of alternatives; myself, I made a chart about the characters' stats and tried to get the best performance of magic damage or healing, special skills and such.

FF VII is a combination of this and the unnecessary mini games. The rest is not surprising to me. The plot or events I mean.

So it could be said that the FF series went a bit "downhill" after the FF VI (or III whatever). And I agree on this. So to speak (after everything I wrote), I can say that I also want the FF game defined by the OP. Thank you (blah).

Honestly, what you're describing is FF12.

On the subject of 'no more emo heroes' I don't exactly get that. Breaking down the 'main' characters of each FF game after 6 (Most of them follow the line of not having a 'singular' character, FF7 and 12 are both focused more on a larger cast) None of them are emo, infact, I don't even get why people use a word for defining a genre of music to define people, it's limited and it doesn't fit.

inb4 cloud is emo. Cloud isn't emo, he's got a shitload of mental problems from having shinra experiment on his BRAIN and he's a huge jackass too (if you paid attention during the first half of the game) I imagine anyone would be moody after they found out they weren't who they thought they were and that people had been using your brain to test out new forms of genetic modification

I have not played FFXII. What I can tell you is that Vaan is the exact type of female looking guy that I am talking about. I don't know any guys who look like that and never have. Take into consideration that this isn't even about the sexuality of the character. It is simply a hybrid man who has features of a woman. It is a pretty guy.

FFVII was about Cloud. Yes there are other characters, but it was about him.

The word emo may have once defined a genre, but for some time now has had alternate meanings. I'm not going to argue with you about if it is an appropriate word or not. You know damn well what I mean. While I wouldn't waste my time arguing about Cloud, who just isn't that interesting... I will say that Sephiroth is the exact type of emo character that I have no interest in.

Clearly you haven't been to Japan. Vaan really isn't all that far off the mark. There ARE guys that DO look like that. Like this hunky hunky guy.

I'm not going to argue about any of this, because it is just a matter of different tastes. All of the Final Fantasys were good to me except X-2 and XII, all for different reasons, that a can't talk somebody into agreeing with and certainly can't be talked out of liking. If you want a final fantasy game with the aforementioned qualities, you should check out Lost Odyssey.

I think every future Final Fantasy protagonist should be wearing a shirt. It got annoying really fast to have to look at Vaan's dumb exposed midriff during every cutscene.

I also think the level-up system from Final Fantasy II (The original FFII on the Famicom) was pretty ingenious, though everyone else I know absolutely hates it.

I hated 8's leveling up system where the enemies all level up with you. It completely defeats the purpose of leveling up, and makes it so you can't go back and pwn enemies that used to give you a hard time (which I always found to be quite enjoyable.)

I don't mind if there are certain enemies/areas that are specially designed to level up with you to provide an extra challenge, but not the whole damn game.

I hate the bullshit mini games they thrown in to artificially extended the length of the game. Shit like Triple Triad and Blitz Ball.

I also like the classic class/job system, especially when its customizable like in FFIII and V. It adds more replay value to the game.

I've played FF12 very thoroughly, (it's my favorite) The game (beyond the first ten minutes and the last five) has almost -nothing- to do with vaan whatsoever. He's pretty much just there to occasionally relate some important plot detail the player might have skipped out on while everyone pays attention to balthier, fran and basch.

To be honest, the only FF games I didn't have problems with were II, III, and VII... the others I just haven't played, or got too annoyed with to finish.

Nah, not so much. I really want to do this guy though. It's something about a hot guy smoking a cigarette...
