I'm not sure if luck exists or not, but if it does I could use some of the good type.

Luck is a mix of opportunity and preparation. Right place right time?

You can create your own luck, but the old fashioned dumb luck is pretty rare.

I'm not lucky at all. I could lose a coin flip 10 times in a row.

I was born in America, and I appear to be white (not full white). I would say that I was born in a pretty good position. I consider that luck. (not that I think that being white is better or anything, I'm just saying you start out with less stacked against you when you look white in this country) Do I win in Vegas... Hell no, but I think generally speaking I'm a very fortunate person.

Eh, I tend not to believe in luck. Most of the time luck is just someone's way of making a random occurrence "make sense" to then when they can't understand it, like religion.

Did you mean to omit a "no" option from the poll?

I'd be interested to know how you'd define it then.

I define luck as a random occurence that significantly effects you. If the effect is positive, it's good luck. If the effective is negative, that's bad luck.

Picking the winning lottery numbers, that's luck.
Being dealt a Royal Flush in poker, that's luck.
Getting a job because the other guy in the running got killed by a drunk driver, that's good luck for you and bad luck for the other guy.

I don't believe in the luck thats influenced by non-sequiter actions.

I appreciate it when good things happen to me, but I'm not convinced that karma or the like had anything to do with it.

Perhaps I should have worded it differently. I believe in luck insofar as it's the term people use to define it as you defined it. What I don't agree with is that people can do/say things that will lead to bad luck, e.g. breaking a mirror, stepping on a crack in the sidewalk, etc.

It makes me laugh (derisively) when people say they're generally unlucky in gambling or "unlucky in love" or whatnot. There's not as much luck involved in poker as people may think; 80% of the games are won by playing the opponent, not the cards dealt. There's a reason that there are famous poker players and that those same people are winning most of the time. Love, on the other hand, is usually bad for those people because they can't judge character well.

Indeed. That's why I used the unbeatable hand as an example. But of course, just having an ace hand isn't enough in poker. You need to be able to convince your opponents that you don't have a great hand, or they'll all fold and you'll end up wasting the hand. You need to get them to be the ones that keep upping the ante, make them think that they're in control, and then swoop in for the kill.

I'm inclined to say yes luck exists because I'm not the most conventionally attractive guy in the world, but most of my girlfriends have been really good looking. Confused

Sorry about the lack of a "no" option.

I was away for a bit and didn't realize that the no option wasn't updated on there. Oh well...

I wouldn't say breaking a mirror (and others alike) is completely nothing. For a superstitious person those things gives them bad luck. By bad luck, let me define. To them they believe in it so much it will drag them down, whether they're conscious of it or not. So its not really bad luck for a superstitious person, they just expect something bad to happen and thats probably why something bad happens, they probably let there guard down or something.

So if you are not superstitious then doing something considered to be unlucky doesnt matter. Also, no offence to anyone who is superstitious, but it seems to me a system that gives people false un-securities.

Anyway, we all have good moments in life and the bad... and there will always be moments that annoy the hell out of you, but in the end all the matters is doing the best you can.

I believe in luck. May I ask people, who believes in fate and destiny here?

there are 10 types of people in this world, those who understand binary and those who dont.

Then what you consider "bad luck" is actually just a self-perpetuation of unfortunate events. I consider that more a sign of weakness than luck. But I see where you're coming from.

I'm not a big believer in fate or destiny either. Unless those are the names of the strippers I saw a few weeks ago.
