Did any of them in actual have popular games that produced a sequel?

Back then they didn't whore out sequels like they do today. Pitfall and River Raid were the only lucky ones to get a sequel.

All atari games are terrible shit. they're a clusterfuck of bleeps and squares with no redeeming gameplay value.

Sadly, both Pitfall 2 and River Raid 2 were terrible. Especially River Raid II. RR2 had this whole pointless sequence where you had to launch off an aircraft carrier before you could shoot stuff. All it was was anotyher way to die.

In addition to the games listed above, I believe both Centipede and Millipede were on the 2600.

Not to mention Atari would probably still be a powerhouse today if they would have been the American distrubutor of the NES like Nintendo originally asked them to.

Just think, today you could be play Smash Bros on you Atari Wii.

Nintendo approached Atari, who by then had a big share of the American video&computer -game market, in 1983. They were ready to sell Atari the rights to distribute the NES everywhere outside Japan. They were so close to an agreement that they actually planned to sign the agreement on C.E.S. in June the same year.

However when Atari saw that Coleco demonstarted a (unlawful) prototype of Donkey Kong for their home computer Adam on the C.E.S. they refused to sign the deal since they assumed that Nintendo was also forging a deal with Coleco.

You might speculate what would have happened if Atari hadn't seen that Donkey Kong protype and actually signed the deal. The worst case scenary would that they would just have abandoned the Famicom. This way they would have elimiated one possible oponent on the video game / home computer -market and their own 8-bit system, the Atari 7800 ProSystem with backwars compability with the current library of Atari 2600 CVS games would have had a much better chance of success...

(Atari was in fact a doomed company when they were negotiating the deal with Nintendo. They were loosing the incredile amount of $2 million - Daily. The only thing that kept the already crashed company from going bankrupt was the fact that 20% of the company was owned by Wanrer Communications, which now is Time Warner.)

Nintendo continued to search for distributors for their console and in 1985, Mr. Arakawa (President at Nintendo of America) managed to persuade one retailer to release it as a test in New York, and you know the rest, don't you? Within 10 years of the release in February 1986, the NES sold around 30 million copies in the US only, and had approximately 90% of the 8-bit market! The NES was released in Europe 1986.

There are a lot of terrible Atari 2600 games. There are a lot of awful arcade ports that were done better on other systems. But there are also some classics. Almost everything Activision did was great, and Imagic made some great games as well. Some of the best titles including Keystone Capers, River Raid, Pitfall, and Demonoid Attack.

Was the 7800 backwards compatible with just the 2600, or with the 5200 as well?

2600 only, the 5200 had much longer/larger cartridges.

Not all atari games are awesome. Some are a horrific assault on your senses that just have no gameplay. I played a jet game where the only thing you hear is a constant rocket thruster sound at ear rape volume levels while flying back and forth too quick to control a goddamn thing. FUN.

Some Atari games are decent actually, I was just being a prick. Missle command is pretty awesome.

Haha, classic. My friend actually owned the one game with the cowboy bonin' the Indian against a cactus. The name slips my mind.

I had this one 2600 game that was fucking terrible. It was called Space Shuttle or Space Launch, or some bullshit like that. It was supposed to be a shuttle launch simulator and it was awful. You sat there and mashed THE ONE FUCKING BUTTON on the Atari 2600 controller and pretended you were in a space shuttle. The entire game was sky. You watched the sky change from blue to black and that's how you knew you were winning. Did I mention it was awful?
