Millions of years ago Shang Tsung established a sacred tournament as a competition between his armies and earthrealm. Takeshi Kaga rallied the best chefs of Earth into the Iron Chef Society, a group established to discern a champion every 50 years to defend Earth in the tournament.

The Great Masaharu Morimoto was one such warrior defeating Shang Tsung and becoming Grand Champion. Morimoto only kept the title for one generation before eventually falling to Shang Tsung's then-new secret weapon, a Shokan prince named Goro. Goro proceeded to win the following eight tournaments, giving the Outworld warriors 9 consecutive victories.

Two years later, Earth rallied some of its best fighters in order to win the tenth tournament and preserve Earthrealm's freedom. Among the established warriors were Koumei Nakamura, Rokusaburo Michiba, and Johnny Cage. With the help of Takeshi Kaga, the Earthrealm warriors were victorious and Koumei Nakamura became the new champion of Mortal Kookoff.

Unable to deal with Shang Tsung's failure, Shao Kahn ordered the Tarkatan horde to raid the Kitchen Stadium. The Tarkatan horde killed most of Koumei Nakamura's fellow chefs and enraged Koumei Nakamura enough to follow them into Nazi Germany, where construction had begun on Outworld concentration camps.

A man Known as Schindler pleases the Tarkatans and enjoys his new-found wealth and status as "Herr Direktor." Using his influence, he manages to help the remaining Iron Chefs infiltrate Shang Tsung's stronghold, where with the help of the Lin Kuei, they manage to exact revenge.
