So a game comes out. It's very well-received at first, but somewhere along the line, someone discovers or realizes something about the game that makes it not as good as people think it is. This creates a snowball effect of criticism until there's too much of it, as the game may not be that good, but it's not that bad, either. I see this sentiment in the following games:

Wizards & Warriors - As long as I can eventually get the job done, I'm okay with mediocrity.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - I know a lot of you still don't believe me about beating this game having utilized all four turtles all throughout and not having much trouble with Area 2, but I have.
Batman - It may be easy to hate this game for what it isn't, but I think it's even easier to like it for what it is.
Sonic Heroes - Multiple playable characters spread across four teams, each with their own scenario? Sign me up!
Shadow The Hedgehog - Hardcore Sega fans say this game represents everything wrong with the poor company, but the game is still perfectly solid.

You guys?

EDIT: ok nm I get it. You meant the sentiment surrounding the game (not the game itself) is so overrated, that the game becomes underlooked.

At first I looked at the "so overrated, it's underrated" topic and thought wtf? FYI: Just because a lot of people denounce the game, doesn't make the game itself overrated.

Wow, I thought the exact same thing when I saw this topic. Now that is so weird. Or is it?

Sonic Heroes may have been a cool concept, but the controls were wonky and things kept making you stop running, thus destroying the illusion of speed that makes most Sonic games fun. And the theme song is terrible. Mad

i actually liked the original batman. i remember my brother got it for his birthday or something. and my cousin was supposed to get SMB3 so we can trade games but his dumbass bought batman too. i could never beat the second to last boss in batman, so i was never able to finish the game. one day though, one day. i'll get you one day, gadget.

saying you played it on emulator is the equivalent of saying you didnt play the cart right?

I loved all of these games, but tehy were far from perfect. I think what it really comes down to is "how much bullshit am I willing to overlook for the sake of enjoying this game?"

wizards and warriors was really frustrating, but really addictive for some reason.

TMNT was INCREDIBLY difficult, but difficult in the "I want to get better at this" sort of way.

batman was plodding and slow, but you could wall jump!

sonic heroes was the only 3d sonic game that seemed to understand that sonic is supposed to be runnign as fast as he can, and not trying to find his way around an enviroment. it's my favorite of the 3d games. too bad most of the characters were exactly the same.

shadow was pretty much sonic adventure with a bad guy. if you liked sonic adventure's gameplay, there was nothign wrong about this game, gameplay wise, and at the end of the day, aren't we all in it for the gameplay?

First, I played the ROM. Years later, I played the cart. I hope that clears it up forever.

Seconded. I've heard Patton Oswald pronounce it that way, and that's good enough for me.

As a video game, Batman is great. I love all of Sunsoft's NES stuff. Yes, even the oft-maligned Fester's Quest. But those of you who didn't own a NES in 1989 can't possibly fathom how disappointing it was at the time. This was a game based off the biggest movie of the year, the movie that every little boy could recite line for line. And so for a game to come out based on that movie where you fought robots and flying men, it was more than a little bit disappointing. The Joker really should have been the boss of every level, and he should have pulled the Robotnik and gotten away each time until the final showdown in Gotham Cathedral. But again, the game is by no means bad; it's just not Tim Burton's Batman.

Sonic Heroes is great. I would second what Jew said about speed, but I would argue that Secret Rings understood this as well.

Wizards and Warriors is an ugly, mediocre game. But it's fun, the music is catchy, and everyone played it back in the day.

Shadow the Hedgehog is terrible. I don't think I've ever played a 3D platformer with so many bottomless pits.

And you all know my thoughts on TMNT. Maybe I'm just still bitter that I spent two hours trying to figure out how to use the fucking grappling hooks.

I never got past teh grappling hook part in TMNT unfortunately.

also, I never played secret rings. after I get NIGHTS I'm gonna get it and try it. but before I do any of that, I need GTA4 and virtua fighter.

i can agree w/this statement. but i was 7 and didnt know much better. and i thought the cutscenes in the game that mimicked the movie cust scenes were awesome at the time.

i never got to that part before i had to return the rented game. and for some reason, my cousin told me that michelangelo was the best swimmer, and i believed him, so i always saved him for that underwater stage. that way, i had a full health turtle and would be able to beat that part.

I'm going to say Diddy Kong Racing. Most people write it off as a mario kart clone or the "other kart game" for N64, but it actually holds it's own very well. Fully rendered 3d graphics, multiple unique vehicle types, story mode w/ overworld, well imagined courses with vehicle specific shortcuts and boss races were all done for the first time here. Most people complained that the hovercraft was too hard to control, but I actually loved using it, especially in those water levels. The only things that sucked about this game compared to MK64 was it was considerably slower (due to everything being in 3d) and the Rare characters were pretty lame overall. Since I no longer have my N64, I'm going to have to pick it up again if it ever comes out on the VC, or if I ever get a DS.
