You can replace the PS3 harddrive with almost any 2.5" SATA hard drive, which are mostly used for Laptops.

There is a growing database of which models works. Most due, only some off brands do not have the power connector and sata connector lined up right.

I have also heard that the default PS3s use 5400RPM drives, and if you replace them with 7200RPM drives, you'll notice better load times.

They are also really easy to replace:

I took a 40 gb one out of a system at work, thinking I could put it into my old laptop and get it workign again, but the connectors on the bottom look entirely different. the ps3's harness also looked alot different than the one in that video.

The laptop you were probably trying to install it into was probably a IDE interface and not a SATA. 2.5" SATA drives have been used in Laptops for only about 2 years.

So, the hard drive that came out of it just has a bunch of pins on the back and not the little "L" shaped connector, right?
