so... quick question.

what does i.e. mean? i usually think it means 'in essence'
dont know if thats correct or not.

how about e.g.? is that 'example given?'

i know there are more abbreviations people normally use, but i never actually learned what they meant and since im at work im too lazy to do an in-depth search. and i get in trouble if im caught screwing around the internet instead of, you know, working.

e.g. = "exempli gratia," meaning "for example."

i.e. = "id est," which is more like "that is to say..." for when you're being specific.

"et alii". Latin for "and others". Usually used in scientific publications to denote that research assistants etc. were involved.

et al. = "et alii," meaning "and others"

Used a lot of the time in citing books with multiple authors (argh, flashbacks to writing papers with bibliographies...) like "Johnson, Bob, Alex Smith, et al. A Book About Stuff. ..."

EDIT: Tyop beat me to it. Wink
