I know this game just came out, but has anyone played it yet?

American reviews have been tepid, but it went over huge in Japan.

Dragon Warrior always goes over huge in japan. It could be pure and utter shit and japan would still buy the fuck out of it.

My guess is that like the majority of the series, its was mediocre, unambitious, and had gameplay that was better done somewhere else.

At first I thought this was just a remodeled remaked of Dragon Quest Kenshin, but apparently it's just spiritually succeeding of it. I'll probably get it though.

They must be doing something right. And thanks to them, you'll get to keep playing overproduced pretentious Final Fantasy games filled with machine guns, J-Pop, and unnecessarily long cutscenes for many years to come.

I didn't say that Final Fantasy was the way to go either. You forgot to mention that magic in final fantasy is retarded; fun fact: knowing that the ice varmint is weak to fire does not make you smart! How ungodly tough am I to survive having the moon dropped on my head? Why is just about every black mage spell that doesn't inflict damage worthless? The newest final fantasy games are basically MMOs minus the friends and WoW polish.

Dragon Quest is popular because its familiar. You are pretty much guaranteed the basic RPG experience. That is, you kill things, take its stuff, level up, etcetera. If you play RPGs to relax, or you don't want to risk cash on some bizzaro hyper-competative RPG whatsit, dragon warrior is the way to go.

They have been doing something right. For japan. In america Dragon Quest has always had low penetration.

RPGs in general have always had low market penetration here. Even the classics didn't do all that great. Therefore if an RPG does well in Japan, it's a pretty safe bet it's a decent game. The Japanese are very weird, but they don't tolerate crappy games.

I picked this up, pretty good, pretty much DQ lite + Lightgun game only your light gun is a sword.

There are some problems with the execution though, your companions are worthless, except for the healing girl, the rest burn through their mana on the first fight of a stage and then complain the rest of the stage until you feed them mana items.

The upside is it's a total OCD game, stages can be run perfectly, characters can be max leveled, you can own every piece of equipment in the game and one of every sword. Plus the super moves are fucking Thundercats. THUNDER......THUNDER.....THUNDERCATS HOOOOOO.

But I thought you could change their play style so they don't go all out at the beginning, at least according to the manual. I just bought the game but haven't gotten around to trying it. In the past week I've bought Metroid Prime: Corruption Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, and DQ Swords.

basically your options are balls to the wall or do nothing, you can also set them on manual control but seriously that's like driving and talking on your cellphone.

Also the whole game is voice acted I forgot to mention that, not too bad either, although they gave the girl a french accent which is grating as hell to listen to, but you do get to pick out the name she calls you. CHOPPA! GET TO DA BOSS!

That makes sense, seeing as her name is Fleurette.

Is this game essentially Dragon Quest IX, or is it some sort of spinoff?

DragonQuest VIII was great, IMO

Quote:
Square Enix Officializes Dragon Quest DS Remakes
Two-thirds of the Zenthia trilogy will be English-speaking firsts.

Some of you avid role-playing-game aficionados might remember that back in 2007, Square Enix announced its intention to remake a trio of back-catalog Dragon Quest titles on the Nintendo DS with a slick new coats of paint and colorful, cartoonish presentations.
Although the project has largely been MIA in the months since, a few sharp-eyed Internet readers happened to notice yesterday that a new website had gone up over at Square Enix's North American branch promoting the first of these remakes. Less than 24 hours after that fact comes the official announcement of localized North American releases for all three titles.

Collectively known as the "Zenithia Trilogy," the remakes are entitled (in order): Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen, Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, and Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Reverie. Only one of these games -- Dragon Quest IV -- has actually ever been released in North America before, so those gamers curious as to what exactly Enix was up to in the time period prior to Dragon Quest VIII will now have a chance to find out. The first game in the trilogy is set to hit stores on September 16, 2008.

Square Enix promises Dragon Quest IV will have "a tale of epic proportions told through a unique chapter sequence that enables players to experience multiple character perspectives." Much like Dragon Quest VIII, the remakes all contain character and monster art by popular Dragon Ball Z artist Akira Toriyama. The game looks very sweet so far, with colorful twin-screen cartoon environments and the series' trademark silly-but-endearing monsters now fully animated for your whacking pleasure.

With all that Dragon Quest going around, you've got to wonder if Square Enix might not be risking a little Japanese RPG burnout by the time Dragon Quest IX: Protectors of the Starry Sky hits town on November 20. But the RPG ironmen who have already finished a sequential playthrough of all the remastered Final Fantasys and are currently shopping around for future endurance challenges will, of course, be right pleased.

we all knew it was coming, but its finally official.
