Are the creators of SSBB relatively thick-headed or are they making somekind of awkward statement? It depends on how you feel about it but all things considered there appears to be only two ways to look at this; thick-headed or making a statement. How can this be?
The following may contain spoilers (though this was done in Melee so the "spoiler" effect is debatable...)
In Adventure Mode SSE (SubSpace Emissary) you are fighting an evil group of beings turning others into trophies and collecting them. As the protagonist it is your goal to fight this evil, turn the trophies back into living creatures and put an end to it once and for all...
HOWEVER, what are you rewarded with? Coins, stickers and trophies. TROPHIES? You can even use your coins in a coin shooting minigame to knock out more TROPHIES! Collecting trophies just like the bad guys, ey? Yup, and to top things off you even have a place to organize your trophy collection and admire it in all of its glory.
So what's the deal here? You fight the evil trophy collectors off only to become one yourself? Is this an episode of Deep Thoughts from Nintendo? Or is it merely a lack of creativity, undersight, being thick and not picking up on the irony, etc?
Discuss, if you can, the irony of this.

Well, its also the only way you can unlock 2/3 of the hidden characters in the game.
Fuck the "Great Maze." First you play the game and then its like "and now the whole game again, abridged."
Tabuu is a fucking jackass too.

I love how a thoughtful and somewhat interesting post was completely dismantled and destroyed within the first three replies. Good job, guys! Just kiddin'.
Although I haven't played the game myself, I understand what you're getting at, and yeah, that is probably just an oversight by Nintendo. I highly doubt they considered the darker implications of collecting trophies.

I don't care about the implications. SubSpace Emissary blows anyway.

Okay heres a possible explanation. All of the trophies you collect are just trophies, while subspace emissaries trophies are living things. Its not the trophy collecting, its the transmutation.

i accidentally falcon-punched a deer with my chevy cavalier yesterday. it went like 40 ft. hitting deer with a car is surprisingly hilarious. especially the tufts of fur stuck in my red sox license plate.

You accidentally yelled FALCON PUNCH! as you ran over a deer?
And thanks for all the well thought out and insightful replies.

Is it possible to erase SSE data? Due to mashing, I have three save files and I'd like to cut it down to one.

Actually, you have to stand there and yell something like "FAALCAOWWN...PAUNCH!!!"
And sorry nobody wants to discuss the philisophical ramifications of a world where a bright pink puffball, a fat plumber, a elven warrior, and a chick in a powersuit fight each other for no reason in particular.

SSBB and SSBM have some weird plot where you aren't actually playing as the characters, they're living trophies. In the original SSB they were dolls.

I dunno, I rather liked the Subspace Emissary myself. Probably because I was really rusty at the game when I played and I didn't want to get my ass handed to me, so I was happy to do something cooperative for the time being. And I got all sucked into the storyline, even though as you guys have said, it's kind of silly.
About the storyline itself, I doubt the designers wrote it that way so they could wait until you had this thought and then jump out and yell "HAHA JOKE'S ON YOU, YOU'VE BECOME WHAT YOU JUST FOUGHT!" It's probably that the trophies you collect are just that, while the trophies in the story are living creatures imprisoned within trophies. Or whatever.

I'd just assume that turning into a trophy was Nintendo's way of saying "they died" as opposed to scarring many stupid children for life by saying their characters "died."

I like SSE as well. But I wish there was more voice acting. I guess they felt that since Link and Mario never say anything meaningful, that a real game script was out of the question. Parts of the storyline make no sense. Specifically, why does R.O.B. suddenly join then? Or Game & Watch for that matter?

R.O.B. joins them because the R.O.B.s are being used against their will. he finally had his moment where he said "alright, enoughs enough," but his R.O.B.s were mind controlled or whatever. he joined up with your crew to put an end to the tyranny.
I imagine Mr. Game n Watch is the same. He and his homies were probably forced to pilot the hailbred, then when metaknight and his boys came in and liberated the joint, Game n Watch decided to join to help put a stop to things.
What I'm really curious about is if all the bad guys were working together to steal trophies for Master Hand. I mean, they seemed to be, then DeDeDe hijacked Wario's shit, Gannondorf "killed" Bowser, and stuff like that.
I also like how sonic JUST showed up at the end of the game for the boss battle.

There's a plot to these games? I always just figured it was about beating the crap out of your friends endlessly.

Yeah, sounds like a whole weird Kingdom Hearts-iverse.

Brawl is the only one with a true plot, found in the SSE mode. The other games just barely hint at a plot.

Is there any way to dodge/block that attack Tabuu does where he goes to the center of the screen and causes a massive explosion? I'm trying to beat Boss Mode with everyone, but that attack is more or less an instant kill even on easy...

Roll dodge or sidestep takes care of it. I hate his attack in which he traps you inside the gold cage. It follows you if you jump and you can't sidestep or anything.
