I was a big fan of San Andreas but I seriously can't get into this game, im only like two missions in and I already wanna take it back, besides being able to find places easier this game doesn't draw you in like San Andreas did and isn't as good storywise. The Serbian guy and his cousin are both unlikeable and the game gives you a girlfriend way too early who is beyond corney. In San Andreas you really felt like you had to build yourself up to the top, in this game I don't even give a crap about the main character.
For those who have played or beat the game does it get better or are my gripes well founded?

I can see why it didn't draw you in as fast as San Andreas did; San Andreas was faster in multiple aspects, and it just had...more. But eventually, the city grows on you.
And regarding the main characters, I'd say that the majority of the characters seem like complete douchebags, but 80% of the characters eventually become not-annoying (especially Niko, I hated him at first and he eventually became my favorite). The only characters who continue to be douchebags are either evil or you can kill them anyway.

I personally love the game, it does seem a bit easier though but that's probably why I like it. In SA and others I was never good at racing missions and this game has fewer so I can progress further.

I remember GTA4 was a game that was on some gaming sites list of "games we got sick of playing after 2 weeks" or something along with Mega Man 9.

I bought GTA4 for the Xbox 360 and was not all that impressed. I hated how the cops would come after you for "minor infractions" in the GTA sense that is. I loved that you could basically go on a mini-rampage on the original GTA games before the cops even started showing up. I know they were trying to make it more realistic but what they did totally ruined what I loved about the originals.

Most of the people I know who have GTA4 say its sub par, so I guess you're not alone.

I hate the game because I don't have a 360 and my PC isn't powerful enough to run it.

The only time I got seriously annoyed at GTA 4 was when I was walking down the sidewalk talking to someone on my cell phone, when a cop ran into me and I got a wanted star, so I can definitely see where you're coming from.

I think the best way to compare it against 3, VC, and SA, is that it is DIFFERENT.
It takes awile before you start realizing that it is GTA. I wasn't impresses with the story or characters at the beginning either. But, the more I played it, the more I liked. By, the time I beat it, I didn't want it to end.
And, I also wasn't impressed by Nico at first, but now he is my favorite out of all the games. You start to realize that he has a shitty life but still manages to keep a sense of humor. Also, if you play some more, you'll learn why you got your girlfriend so quickly.

It's a nice story and very interesting but it is kind of a big departure from the goofy storys from the spin offs.

Dude, give it a chance. Didn't you just say you were only 2 missions into it? What were the first two missions in San Andreas, and you claim to like it?
Meanwhile, I laughed my ass off when I found out you could fly through the windshield in a car accident. Take one bridge, one really fast car, and one wreck...

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas. |

I've never played GTA4. The reason? I lost interest watching San Andreeas being played for countless hours. It looked kinda boring. The GTA series is getting stale for me, especially since many games now use a GTA style 3rd person view.

They took a swing at realism, rampages are still possible but you're going to need to use your head and cover. If you're gonna run and gun like the old games you're gonna die.
I found the Ai to be a lot more challenging than the previous games. Not everyone agrees with me but I swear that if you ditch the car they're looking for and get into another one without being spotted doing so you can leisurely escape the search ring, it's hard to pull off but I've done it.
Only thing I thought was stupid was how if you pickup a brick and throw it at a pedestrian they don't fall down, but a coffee cup lays them out every freaking time. It's like they switched the physics for bricks and coffee cups on mistake.
It's 130 in the morning and I'm tired so sorry if any of this is rambly.

I didn't dig it too much. It seemed fantastically well made, it just felt like it took itself too seriously. My favorite is Vice City, because it was awesomely funny. I didn't get that from this one.

Vice City was my favorite as well. I loved the 80's setting, the music and there are some hilarious moments. One of my favorite quotes from Vice City:
"What did I tell you about the giant shark? I said no giant shark! Just keep the camera pointed at the poontang!"

I played my roommate's copy of 4, and didn't like it. The control was clunky (par for the course with this series), The characters were unlikeable (Save for Packy or whatever his name was), and Niko was just a total asshole. He'd go whine about morals and how people are monsters, but would scream tough-guy phrases while murdering cops.

I think you came in at the wrong time, Greg. Niko is a likeable guy. Promise.
I didn't like how the game didn't have nearly as many weapons laying around in hidden places (or maybe I just haven't found much). Although later in the game, you become loaded with so much money and weapons (hint: steal a gun from a cop, get a wanted level, and go on a raid inside a hospital), you'll have all you need.

lol I love how this whole thread gets started after one person decides he doesn't like the game after the first two missions.
I'm sure there are tons of games that if you played the first level or mission and based the entire game off of it they would appear to be balls.
Most people don't like the step toward "realism" but I like it quite a bit.

OMG, that cell phone will drive you crazy! SO do yourself a favor and turn it off aka sleep mode. It does add to the realism though; I'm just not sure if it's in a good way.

Well I went back and played the game again after I got finished studying and I realized it wasn't the game I was expecting nor one that I was going to invest heavy time into. Maybe college has changed me but San Andreas's atmosphere off the bat had me intrigued to the point where i invested a week of my life going through every little thing with it and enjoying every minute.GTA4 was not that game and my sentiments on many game forums are very similar or the same
The characters were annoying albeit everyone who worked in that electronics store in that Adam Sandler movie Zohan. San Andreas basically was like a fictional historical piece centered around the events that would be the 1992 riots. The 3rd to the last mission in San Andreas was probably the funest because of the riots starting to go on and you got to relive that in a fictional universe. In GTA4 I just looked at Niko as a taxi driver who carried a gun and act liked a wise guy. This game was so boring in real world terms I am surprised that they didnt make you pull over to take a piss, which goes back to the grip about the cell phone.
I am just going to take it back and use the store credit for RE5, my favorite game series and a game that I am sure will be awesome.

Yeah, the cell phone was the worst part of the game. I know people say you can turn it off, but if you want to have an easy time of getting weapons or cars, etc. then you have to do all the little date things whether you want to or not.

If you like San Andreas, but not IV, you should try Saint's Row. It's more like SA than IV.
I like IV. It took me a little bit to get used to the driving. Now, the only thing that really bothers me is that anytime I'm trying to do something, friends/girlfriends start calling and wanting to hang out. I wouldn't mind if it weren't so frequently.

Overall I liked GTA4, but I preferred the looser, cartoon-like feel of the previous games.
