So I bought this game via virtual console last week and have been playing it for the first time. How can anybody beat that game in under two hours? I must have been running around for 30 minutes trying to execute that speed jump in Maridia to get to that giant worm And apparently your supposed to have over 200 missiles by that time, I barely have over a hundred!

What? Well I get around 200ish by Norfair and then collect the rest on my way down to
Touran.
My best time is right around 2 hours or so with collecting as much as i can.

Under 2 hours with 101% is very doable if you know the route to take through the game. I replayed SM in preparation for the top 100 SNES article, and nearly a decade after my last play through, I still got about 85% in 2 and a half hours, without using any guides.

I know Red Scarlet, the girl who did the 100% in :55 or whatever. She said it involves a lot of memorization, weeding out backtracking where it's not totally required, and the understanding that once you know the game that well, you'll never want to touch it again after mastering it.

Meh i dont trust speed runs unless im there. I really doubt they can land every jump 100% or whatever they are doing for their game.

Most people in the community will either only do TAS runs, or they won't accept TAS runs. Anything you see on speed demos archive is legit as they don't bother with TAS runs. Some require incredible timing or memorization, but you can tell the difference between a run done in realtime and some frameskip/savestate abuse run.

I've tried speed runs, but I always screw up way too much. I think I probably beat SMB quicker when I was just playing to play rather than going for time.
The only speed run I ever did that was worth anything was Simon's Quest. I can't remember my time, but I can make it through in one life and only getting the essentials. Not sure how good I could do compared to others, but I was proud of myself.
I don't remember ever getting the best ending on Super Metroid. After reading the top 100, I got psyched to play it and try, but I can't find my game!!!

Simon's Quest is a tough one to speedrun because there's almost nothing to skip in terms of sequence breaks. I think the record is like 48:00 or something? Love that game though.

I don't understand the enjoyment out of a speedrun, then again, I get most of my enjoyment out of games by fuckign around and taking my time.

getting 100% in super metroid is boring because it's all just random power bombs and bullshit in situations that aren't that interesting. I think zero mission did it better, with the sparkshine puzzles.

I don't mind going for 100% in games, but I hate with it goes over 100% because I don't know if I found everything. I also hate it when games don't show it at all. Like Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Knowing a game well enough to speedrun it involves fucking around quite a bit. That's how you find the shortcuts and quicker methods to do stuff. It's not like someone picks a game up and speedruns it on their first playthrough. Hell, I had Symphony of the Night for almost a decade before I lowered the Alucard cleartime below 50 minutes.

I just don't see the enjoyment in doing it. like, by the time I get good enough at a game to blaze through it like that, the game has lost it's appeal.

I can understand the appeal, and non-assisted runs impress me greatly, but I would never want to do it. Once I know a game well enough that I could speed run it, I actually PREFER to fuck around. I can beat SMB1 pretty quickly, but I rather try and execute the Small Fiery Mario trick in every castle instead.

When I know a game well enough to speedrun it, I prefer to write a 6000 word poem about it.

You should get it published on Nintendo Power or something.

I could never get that trick to work when I was younger. Alas, now that I am older I forgot how to do that trick. Probably still wont be able to do it still.

I'd actually like to watch that. I've seen about a 3-hr run for FFV, and a 7ish-hr one for FFVII, but never VI.
I do remember once hearing that there was some glitch way to view the ending within 11 steps of starting the game, but I don't know if that's true or not.

Oh yeah, apparently it can be done in under 6 hours through excessive abuse of Setzer's Joker Doom, and the Vanish/Doom tricks. Even without them, 6:30 is doable.

Yeah its a lot easier to do on the GBA where you can pause in between Slots. But you dont have vanish doom at all. So its a toss up.

It's fairly simple, I did it entirely by accident when I was a kid. To do it, you need to be Super Mario and you need to be in one of the first seven castle. 1-4 works the best, as there's no bricks, hammers, or fireballs to worry about. Sneak past Bowser and wait by the axe. Bowser will come towards you. When he gets close, jump up. You need to time your jump so that hit the axe and get hit by Bowser at exactly the same time. If you do it correctly Mario will flash and you'll hear the shrinking sound, but Mario won't shrink. When you start the next level, you'll still be Super Mario. The next power-up block you hit will have a Magic Mushroom. Touch it; you'll shrink. The next power-up block you find will have a Fire Flower. Get it and you'll become Small Fiery Mario.
I was never able to do the SMB "infinite" lives trick until I saw someone do it. I read how to do it in live 15 different hint books and I never understood exactly what the meant. Once I saw someone do it, it was easy as hell. I've still never done the Minus World trick without using emulator save states to try over and over again. That one is a fucking pain.
