I saw a YTMND on this a long time ago. I was very amazed. Faithfull came first so it was Megaman that made a reference on music. Only references I can think of is Lil Flip song where he uses the jingle when you start Pac-Man and Justin Timberlake's Lovestoned sounds somewhat similar to Crashman's level.

the whole series is filled with rock references, one way or another. the axl low reference still amuses me the most.

Yep, well in terms of musical reference within the soundtrack, the one that stands out the most is the "Midnight Carnival" I-No theme from GG, and the song Kurenai by X-Japan.
Too lazy to do a compare and contrast, but Axl Low's original theme "The March of the Wicked King", was written to sound like "You're Crazy" from Appetite for Destruction.
