I’ve been a fan of the Guitar Hero game since the original hit shelves back in 2005. Four years alter we have Guitar Hero 5 and in my opinion the series is going downhill.

My main gripe with guitar Hero 5 is the song list. There are a handful of good songs but I really don’t care for a majority of them. Thankfully all the tracks are unlocked for quick play from the start. However if you want to play the career mode you need to play through many songs you may end up not liking. This song list really earns Guitar Hero 5 a lot of negative marks. Even with all the improvements they’ve made to the actual game the song list holds it back.

The gameplay is basically the same but there have been a few very welcome tweaks and additions. Firstly if you are playing with a bunch of friends in person or online anybody can play any instrument they want. This solves the problem of multiple people wanting to play lead guitar or any of the other instruments. Another nice tweak is the ability to jump in and start playing whatever song is playing during moments when the game is in the “attract mode.” The band play has been improved as well. In addition to that there have been a few more competitive modes added. These additions are all great but when you have a poor track list the additions don’t really matter if the music you’re playing them to is not to your liking.

Basically you have a good game that is dragged under by the song list. This is a real shame in my opinion.

Pros:

* People can play on the same instrument as others
* New tweaks make the game feel more refined

Cons:

* Poor track list
* All the improvements are pointless when the track list is terrible

Overall Score: * * *

(All scores are out of 5 stars)

Does 2 Minutes have a good note chart? Also, would you say it'd be worth buying to get Van Halen free?

Most of the decent songs thought I've already played on Rock Band through DLC though.

Well, that's a problem as well. Both companies repeatedly tread the same turf, leading to redundancies. I guess you have to admire GH5 for diversifying, even if a lot of the songs suck.

As one review said: "There's something for everybody in the game's setlist. But there's also something for everybody to hate."

Just got Beatles from Amazon today.

I guess I'll be buying GH5 once my next credit card cycle starts on 9/16. This is a sweet fucking deal. I don't need to buy the box set, right? Just the game?

I'm fairly sure its just the stand alone game, since the code's printed on the back of the game manual. I haven't gotten the game quite yet, anyone out there have this game?

They ask that you send in a copy of your receipt for the game as well.

Wolf Like Me and Blue Orchid are phenomenal. You and Me sucks.

"In My Place"...gee, what a good song to represent Coldplay Rolling Eyes . No wonder everyone else hates them so much.

So I bought this through Amazon, and they didn't send me an invoice. Should I request a new invoice, or do you think if I print one out from online, it'll be fine? It has my name on it, and the game's shipping date. But the terms say I need the original receipt...

i would check w/activision first. i dont think amazon would mind sending you another invoice, but first check to see if a printout would be ok.

Amazon sent me an email back saying that a self-printed final invoice is acceptable, per the deal they have with Activision. I am going to include a copy of the email.

Syd, I think you need to reprieve Elliott Smith from your list of songs you won't play. That dude committed suicide by stabbing himself in the chest. His songs may be a little wimpy, but if you're going to kill yourself, that is METAL.

Looks like a great game, I am just not happy about the Kurt Cabain debacle that is going on right now. I know most will not care about that but just for me personally it is enough to keep me away from the game.

It is stupid because apparently Courtney Love originally agreed to let them use Kurt and even helped them design him and pick his clothing and hairstyle and then turns right around and sues them.

Yeah well we are talking about Courtney "Junkie" Love here I am sure she signed whatever they said she did but even so it is in very poor taste any way you cut it. If it was just Nirvana songs he was involved in there would be no problem, but they have him as a model for every piece of music... please tell me they don't have Filters hey man nice shot song in this game. Anyways at the end of the day it really shows what a human ashtray Courtney really is, and what length company's go to make a buck.

She probably got a shitload of hate from Kris and Dave, like over the whole Nirvana song rights debacle.

It's just shameful and disrespectful for what they did with Cobain and Cash, anyway. Whether you like or hate their music, it's just a matter of decency and respect for any person.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

I don't think he should have been in the game either. Still I find it funny that she agreed to it and is now backpedaling because Nirvana fans are pissed over it.

Cash certainly deserved more respect. Cobain didn't. If you kill yourself and you're not terminally ill and in constant physical pain, you lose any right to respect. You are a piece of shit, and you deserve to have your memory and legacy commercialized, shamed, and debased.
