Pier Solar and the Great Architects.

Developed by the Sega homebrew community, Pier Solar (originally codenamed Tavern RPG) is a traditional RPG that sees you quest for the fate of the universe. It also looks really pretty in that retro-goggles way. The word is that just like my favorite adventures of old, the game is going to be released in cartridge format. A downloadable demo should also be available soon.

While the game has had some online teasers for a while, it should be coming out some time in 2008.

With technology the way it is, you'd think more people would be making their own cartridge video games. And I mean cartridge.

Be that as it may, I still don't know how the hell they did it.

...

How the hell'd they do it?

I think that Nintendo should release licensed development software, so we could make our own SNES, Genesis and Turbografx-16 homebrew games.

This reminds me of a guy that was making a 2D Ocarina of Time for the computer. It looked pretty cool but I don't know if he's still doing it.

There was an announcement from Big N about 8 months ago that they were going to sell Wii dev kits that would allow you to develop games and then upload them to a Nintendo server where that Wii users could download them.

I haven't heard anything about it in awhile though, so perhaps Nintendo got concerned that there'd be nothing but motion-sensitive rape simulators uploaded to the server and abandoned the idea.

Well, not every homebrew game should have to use the Wii Remote motion sensors. I think Nintendo should release Virtual Console development kits so we can make our own SNES and Sega Genesis games.

What, putting a game on a cartridge? It's easy.

Each cartridge has a EEPROM chip, which stores data. You can get some hardware for tampering with an EEPROM for about 30$.

My uncle had a machine like that and I used to write NES games on it. How to do it?

You need a game cartridge for the system you want to write a ROM on. Then you need an EEPROM/Flash writer with some empty EEPROM chips (cheap as dirt, 128 KB EEPROM chip is available for less than a dollar). Then you need a soldering iron.

First of all, you need to take out the original chips from the cartridge, using the soldering iron. You need to live the slots for them clean, so you can insert the chips without any problems.

Then, using the EEPROM hardware connected to your good ole' PC, FWOOSH the ROMs to the memory and put it into the cartridge. Voila!

If you want some pictures, here's a site in Polish. If you can translate it into english, you have a complete tutorial on writing a famiclone cartridge.

A shop here in Poland had one in nearly mint condition. Too bad it was expensive as shit.

But didn't Yaroze run games straight from the RAM? The PlayStation had only 4MB of RAM, so it wouldn't allow much. Yet, Ridge Racer ran straight from the RAM. Only the soundtrack was read from the CD.

Anyone remember the Alladin cartridge by Camerica for the NES? That was used mostly by hobby programmers.
