I've been thinking about approaching this series for a short while now, but I'm unsure which game(s) I should pick up... there's just so damn many. I'm only interested in the 2d KOF series, and not so much the Maximum Impact series. Are there are specific games within the series that are amazingly good/terrible? Any and all opinions would be greatly appreciated.
BTW - I had NO idea that Ralf Jones and Clark Still are the Ikari Warriors from the old Ikari Warriors trilogy (all released on the NES). That also makes playing Metal Slug 6 slightly more fun that it already is.

I enjoyed King of Fighters 95 for PS1 a lot, especially multiplayer. It's the only one I've ever played before though.

I think King of Fighters '94 is coming to the Virtual Console on Monday. Is that any good?

2002 is a dream match(anyone can appear, without regard to continuity), and 2003 has tizoc, so I recommend those. I believe they recently came out on a compilation, if your feeling morally comprimised by ROMs.
I was always fond of 98 as...
1.Its also a dream match, so good character selection.
2. We had it at our arcade, so nostalgia factor right there.
3. Nothing real complex, just don't pick the option that demands that you charge up your super.
4. The hidden desperation moves have that over-exaggerated bonecracking sound effect, and that hyper distorted heavy punch sound. I like hearing those.
Stay away from 2000. It blows.
The newest one came out for PS2. I'm not sure how good it was, but it is cheap as dirt, so its probably worth a shot.
I went back and played 94. I think there are better entries in the series.

I dig 2003 because it has that zany tagging system, as well as having MOTW cahracters. 99 (98?) was great too (probably the best incarnation of the AOF team), and you can't go wrong with NEOWAVE (which I believe was a dream match thing too). Really any KOF game you pick up you will enjoy, honestly.
you can get 2002/2003 as a dual pack on X box, NEOWAVE is on X box, 99 is on Dreamcast (called 98 on psx I think). I think they redid 94 or 96 on X box too.
oh yeah, 2000 and 2001 were released as a dual pack on PS2.
on the topic of the ikari warriors. athena and kensou from the psycho soldiers team were from an old NES game too. I'm sure there are others too.

I was totally obsessed with KoF back in my middle school years. They were fun for a while, but just kinda seemed to get old. Trust me, you've played one, you've pretty much played them all.

KOF are only slightly less distinct than 2D fighters as a series.
I can't think of any other characters from other non-2D fighting series that are present in KOF. If you allow their other 2D fighters (fatal fury and art of fighting), the number greatly increases. If you allow strikers, then the whole field is open.
