ZDNet have made a brave claim that Apple operating systems are much less secure than Windows.

This will almost certainly get a flood of anonymous emails from Apple Fanboys who will shout about how there are no viruses for Leopard. ZDNet has based its findings on all the known security flaws and placed them side by side. The results are fairly compelling.

The vulnerability statistics come from Secunia and ZDNet broke them down by Windows XP flaws, Vista flaws, and Mac OS X flaws.

During 2007 Apple had more than five times the number of flaws per month than Windows XP and Vista in 2007, and most of them were serious. Windows Vista had less flaws than Windows XP.

The article admits that the problems could be much worse. Apple do not admit that it ever has problems with its software until it releases a patch for it. This means that it could be sitting on huge security holes that it has not told anyone about.

So, while there might not be viruses for your shiny Apple computer, there are some fairly juicy security holes for hackers to exploit.

ZDNet admits that all this goes against the conventional wisdom that Apple is somehow more secure than Windows. But since the conventional wisdom is a result of some canny marketing by Apple this is not not really surprising.

Just further proves the root cause of the real reason Apple Computers are "safer" is really just the fact that roughly 10% of the populace actually uses them.

This doesn't just apply to hackers and viruses, but also the so called "stability".

You have software that few people use, therefore theres a lot less demand; 3rd party computer software doesn't always have Mac versions, forcing Macs to use 1st party software made by Apple themselves, and of course since it's made by them, logically, it's more stable.

All the variables add up, making Mac's more "stable" in that sense.

Though ironically if the "GET A MAC" people got their way and more people started using Mac's, my point would become way more obvious.

Mac holds just under 5% of the personal computer market share.

Microsoft holds between 90-92%

Of course these stats are varied depending upon the group that is collecting the data, however if you do research on this often, you will see that the trends here are fairly stable and the numbers are within 1-2%

So, is OS X less secure than Windows Vista or XP?

I think if a software has a single software vulnerability it is at risk. So if the argument is that Vista has 5,000 and OS X has 6,000 security holes, does it matter?

There are two very large factors that have nothing to do with the number of flaws.

* How many people have the same problem?
* What is done to a machine that has a known security flaw?

If only 5% of the world is running Macs, it is redundant to say, there are less Mac users. This information seems to elude many people though. It is an odd situation. Back to the point, if a Mac security hole exists, there are less people trying to exploit it based on the number of people who own Macs.

If only 5% of the world is running Macs, why would a talented computer programmer design a software package to steal or destroy on such a small scale? Windows offers a much larger population, why waste time on the 5% when you can go after 90%? If the hack works, the rewards would be much bigger.

Lastly, security flaws exist in software because it would probably take a lifetime to remove all the bugs in an operating system. The millions of lines of code are just to much to weed through for it to be perfect, especially when there are so many different programmers working together to make it work.

The important thing is that the OS makers continue to patch their products as quickly as they can prior to hackers abusing the vulnerability.

On a completely separate note. Both Windows & OS X break at about the same fail rate. So picking one over the other because one seems more resistant to problems is just naive thinking. It makes sense that if 90+% of the world has PC's and 5% has Macs there would be 18 Windows problems for every 1 Mac problem. In my experience as a computer technician for over 9 years, I have found this to be true.

True, but from a hardware failure perspective it is pretty equal.

I thought it was pretty funny when Maddox said you either need to be an artist or in a band to have a Mac.
