Someone just gave me Morrowind for free, and I really want to play it. The only problem is my Cd Drive doesn't work. It won't recognize anything. Blank discs, DVDs, Computer games, CDs. I don't know what the deal is. My Dad constantly burned CDs until it stopped working, so that might have something to do with it. I've checked online for help, and tried the Windows troubleshooter but so far nothing works. Do any of you guys know whats up with it?

Sounds like the laser is fucked over. You might just have to buy a new one.

Damnit, that's what I figured.

you can buy DVD DL burners for $30-$40, so at least it's a fairly cheap part to replace. Just make sure you buy a name brand such as LiteOn or LG. Never buy the Fry's special no matter how cheap it is!

You might want to try taking it out and smashing it with a hammer, then buying a new one. I find this works in 100% of scenarios.

Odd, since I've been having a similar problem. My CD drive works sporadically at this point. I often have to reload the same CD 10+ times before the thing recognizes it.

Re-install the driver. Just a thought. I had a drive I thought was dead and after I gave up and plucked it out...it started working again lol...after i re-installed the driver. Glad I tested it just...one more time

DVD/CD Drives don't really have drivers. They are only controlled by the IDE or SATA drivers on the mobo. You might check to see if there is a firmware revision you can flash on the drive. This helps older drives quite abit, as they can have problems reading and writing on newer media.

I've tried upgrading and reinstalling the driver, no luck.

I need help in terms of buying an affordable detachable HDD. Since im a total n00b when it comes to this, I asked my friend where I can locate one and he sent me these two links:

http://shop4.outpost.com/product/5239627?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148168

The Maxtor one looks nice but he says that lately they been sucking in terms of reviews and quality. his words:
Quote:
I trust Maxtor about as far as I can throw it these days. Seagate at least is a reliable hard drive… so if you were to get this..you’d want to put non critical data on it..imo – for whatever that’s worth…

So, what do you guys think? They're both relatively cheap, but I would like more opinions on these than just my one friend. I trust him, but it still doesnt hurt to ask others.

I have used nothing but Western Digitals for over 8 years now, and have never had a single problem with any of them. (Total I've owned = 8. Total I've put into systems I've built for others 23.)

I highly recommend them.
