Basically, heres a summary of each.

Urban Reign-Well developed combat system (particularly the grappling system, which has some of the largest variety this side of a wrestling game). Non-existant story, and a main character who has double penalties for lacking any sort of personality AND being voiced by the very poorly placed steven jay blum. No free roaming.

Yakuza- Free roaming, with an interesting story in an action movie sort of way. Combat system is simple and unrewarding. One of the villians is voiced by Mark Hamill, which is always a plus.

Basically, they are two games I enjoy that could have been one really good game had they combined the Yakuza writing talents with the Urban Reign game designers.

So, has anyone played either of these?

I have the Urban Reign demo from when I bought SCIII. It was really fun but I've never seen it for sale anywhere.

That's the one I played. Also, that reminds me, I either need to get another copy of SCIII or get the one I have buffed out. When my old G1 PS2 died, it took the game with it.

No... yakuza was the Sega game on PS2 where you can grab random stuff like bicycles to pummel people.

None of Capcom's recent punching games have been very good. Its a shame.

Yakuza isn't too bad, I'd wait until its price drops another five dollars. Urban Reign is very competitively priced at under 20 used.

Now the one I'd be waiting for is Yakuza 2. In japan one company gave it a 38 out of 40, on par with the recent zelda game without having the zelda fanbase. What I'm hoping is that they overhauled the combat system. I mean, sega makes what, soul calibur and virtua fighter? They can do better than what they have been doing.

AM2 is a development company owned by sega. this would be like saying "if they can make an amazing game like virtua fighter 5, why did sonic and the secret rings blow?"

AM2- virtua fighter
sonic team- sonic and his rings

that's kind of a big deal.

I think what he (he?) was implying is that since Sega has put out games with an adequate fighting engine, the overall Yakuza game could be improved for next time... like borrowing someone from another dev team or something? Even if it was just in some kind of consultant sense.

and you couldn't say that first, before the sarcastic remarks?

regardless, I threw the AM2 thing in afterwards. the important thing here is that namco made soul calibur. bass is zero, and zero is bass.

"Don't get sore, Sam" is what Eddie Haskell used to say on Leave it To Beaver when Wally was gonna clobber him. That's classic american pop culture!

Bass is Sam, and Sam is also Zero. I'm Roy Orbison. Obviously.

As per the sega comment, Yakuza 1&2 are some of the most expensive games ever made. Even if Sega themselves didn't make soul calibur or virtua fighter, they do have access to that talent base. They should have taken advantage.
