Chrono Trigger is an absolutely awesome RPG, probably my 3rd favorite SNES RPG, behind Final Fantasy IV and Earthbound.

Chrono Cross was badass. I suck at it, though. I can't get past the mechno-dragon.

Asking if anyone likes Chrono Trigger, is like asking if anyone likes to breathe.

I think it's a great RPG and a staple in console gaming from times gone by. Looking back at it from today's perspective, it's completely linear, it has a horrible plot, the dialog is terse at best, and it more or less just shoves you from one era to the next where you grind for levels and items. But I'll be damned if it wasn't the most fucking awesome game ever back in the day, and to this day it still holds a place in my mind. Plus, the music was rad.

I don't know about you guys, but I could never skip the chance to add Magus to my party instead of turning Glen normal.

Magus was okay. He was like a decent second Crono that used Shadow magic.

Magus is cool, but I always liked frog the most. His theme song should play when you are going to do something noble and heroic.

the first time i played it, when i was 6-ish or so, i was instantly hooked. Chrono Trigger had an awesome battle system, what with combined techs and a type of real-time combat.
almost each playable character came from different time periods, and all but one had a unique sidequest that developed them as characters, plus relationships between them changed over time . even Magus, by having no double or triple techs with any other player, was developed by this, adding to his personality.
The people at Square Enix are bastards for halting the Chrono Resurrection project: http://www.opcoder.com/projects/chrono/

also, earthbound was another kick-ass rpg, not as good as CT in my opinion though.

I remember when I got my Super Nintendo for selling like 1000 1B baseball tickets, I sold all my NES games at a garage sale and went to Zappers with all the money I had made and bought Secret of Mana for like $45 used. I had about $70 dollars left and wanted to buy Chrono Trigger, it was $69.99 NIB. I went to buy it and she freaked cause of the price, and said we'd go to Media Play. We went to Media Play and they had it for the same price, so she said we'll go to Toys R Us. We got to Toys R Us and they didn't have it, and she said I'm not driving anywhere else so just pick a game out I don't care it's your money. The only one that looked remotely interesting was Kirby SuperStar. Wish I would have saved my money...

I ended up trading WCW/nWo World Tour on N64 and Bust-A-Groove for PS1, for a used cart-only copy of CT at Funcoland. A couple of weeks later they had a box on display and the guy let me have it for free, but then the PS1 rerelease was announced and I felt kinda dumb. :p

The ps1 release was shitty, apparently due to load times. It had new cinemas, but ugh, load times.

They didn't bother me so much. Not as smooth as the SNES, but I think the PS1 CT loadtimes gripes are when I knew I was getting old. Those loadtimes were cake compared to C64 load times.

Even worse, if you were loading from a cassette instead of a floppy. Wink

LOAD"*"

READY

PRESS PLAY ON TAPE

(Blue screen for the next 15 - 20 minutes.)

At least with floppies, you could use the awesome "FAST LOAD" catridge!

Despite all I've heard about C64 games, I'm pretty much glad I missed that whole era. I got the Apple II's, the best of the DOS years, and everything from NES and up. As far as I'm concerned, all I missed out on was a horrific clusterfuck of bleeps and squares with no redeeming gameplay value.

At the risk of derailing this topic, I freakin' loved Earthbound! It was the only RPG (besides Super Mario RPG) that I ever played from start to finish.

Well, technically, I never actually finished it. I got to the crashed spaceship at Giygas's level and stupidly saved the game there, unable to go back to the rest of the world. I was totally unprepaired and never had enough items to beat Gigas after fighting all of those really nasty enemies along the way.

Why did the game developers even give you the option to save at a point where they knew you couldn't go back?!! Bleating and Babbling

You don't really "need" any items to beat him, y'know. You just pray after kicking his ass for a bit.

I don't really see how a game being linear became a bad thing.

welcome to the era of sandbox games, where GTA has ruined gaming.

The ultimate in non-linear gaming, if by nonlinear gaming you mean screwing around until you want to further the plot, at which point you jump right back on the rails.

Yeah, I think a good RPG should be fairly linear, but filled with optional sidequests and stuff.

Example: You don't have to get most of Rydia's summon spells in Final Fantasy IV.

Then again, after I had beat Legend of Zelda a bunch of times, I used to pull stupid nonlinear shit like getting the flute right away. Fighting those knights in Level 5 with three hearts, bombs, and a shitty sword = NOT FUN.

Except Pirates! did sandbox in 1987. And it was brilliant.

Crucifying you? They're not being that harsh. They're not even being mildly derisive.
