So, on my way to work today, not only did I hear that the Farrley Bros are working on a Three Stooges movie, but that Moe has already been cast.

And, out of all the people in the world to pick to play Moe Howard?

Russel Crowe...

WTF?

The 3 Stooges movie has been in the works for at least 5 years now, despite enormous backlash every time the idea is brought up. I don't see why the Farelly Brothers insist on trying to do this movie. It's quite apparent that they're creatively bankrupt at this point, and reimagining (i.e. bastardizing) one of the greatest comedy teams of all-time isn't going to do anything to dispel that perception. The Three Stooges are NOT characters, they are Moses "Moe" Horwitz, Samuel "Shemp" Horwitz, Jerome "Curly" Horwitz, Louis "Larry" Feinberg. Yes, they un-Jewed their names for Vaudeville and Hollywood, but their stage names and their character names were interchangeable all but a handful of Stooges shorts. I've said it once and I'll say it again: recasting the Stooges is like bringing back Charlie McCarthy and pairing him with a new ventroquilist; no one's going to stop you from doing it, but that doesn't mean it's not fucking retarded.

Oh, and here's a quote from an article about Russell Crowe potentially being Moe: "In the film, Moe meets Larry and Curly in an orphanage, but they have to adapt to the outside world. The one thing that they do adapt to is 'passing gas as a means to blow up balloons."

What the FUCK is that!? The Stooges were about slapstick, not fart jokes. The article mentions Mel Gibson and Benicio Del Toro as potential choices for Moe as well. I'd like either of them way better than Crowe. I'd also pay big money to see Stallone as Moe. And if they insist on pulling this bullshit, they need to get Billy West to play Larry. His Stimpy voice sounds pretty much exactly like Larry.

This kind of stuff pisses me off. Why couldn't they just make a movie with 3 other characters that beat the shit out of each other. Next they will want to make a Marx brothers movie and that will just piss me off more.

It's bad enough to remake a movie. It's another thing to pretend to be the people that made the movie/show. It would be one thing if it was a biopic. But just pretending to be other actors is just lazy.

Yeah, I would have no problem with a biopic. There was a made for TV Stooges biopic several years ago and it was great.

Actually, I think if they green-screened Billy West to be all three of them, it might not suck so terribly. He's hilarious and seems like the kind of guy who would be reverent to the material and not want to ruin it with cheap laughs (though it's not like it would be his choice on how the jokes went but...)(also, he's not even been mentioned in the project, I'm just expanding the "what if" Syd put out there.)
