Hi,

I've thought I'll make a list of some great open source remakes, that often make old (and not so old) hits shine today. They have incredible gameplay, usually much better modern graphics, without the need for being pirated. So, when you next time decide for some old school gaming, consider trying these.
Hold on, it's going to be a long post.

Neverball

Game similar to the Super Monkey Ball on Gamecube. You have to collect enough coins with the ball and find the exit in a limited timeframe, but instead of the ball you control the table on which you are placed. Very addictive game, marvelous OpenGL graphics, and lots of hi quality levels.

Trackballs
http://trackballs.sourceforge.net/
Image

Clone of Marble Madness from Atari. Acceptable hi res OpenGL graphics, many levels.

XMoto

Clone of Elastomania (Windows). Hi res OpenGL graphics, downloadable content, loads of levels. Ported to Nokia 770. Awesome game, especially for the fans of Elastomania.

Frozen Bubble

Hi quality remake of Puzzle Bubble/Bust a Move. Colorful graphics, 2p split screen, 5p online multiplayer, level editor. Addictive! Ported to Java Mobile, but not to Windows. Linux only, sorry.

Rocks'n'Diamonds

Image

From Wikipedia: "Rocks'n'Diamonds is a scrolling tile-based computer puzzle game that can be described as a combined Boulder Dash, Supaplex, Emerald Mine, and Sokoban clone. " All levels from those games + lots of additional ones. And a level editor. Lots of fun!

Frets On Fire

"Clone" of Guitar Hero from PS2. Played in an unconventional way with the keyboard, but joypads and guitar controllers are also supported. Original tracks, funny tutorial, great modern OpenGL graphics, Guitar Hero song importer, song editor, and thousands of downloadable songs.
A must-try for everyone!

Scorched 3D

3D remake of the classic Scorched Earth. Enough said. Just try it.

Doomsday

Since Id Software released the source code of Doom, many people started modernizing it. Probably the most advanced project is the Doomsday. Includes ports for all major operating systems, OpenGL graphics, 360 degrees free view rotation, and optional hires textures, 3d models, new music themes. Supports all kinds of Dooms, Hexen, Heretic. Requires original wad files! Just look at the screens....

Armagetron

A great remake of the original Tron. An unforgettable 3D challenge for computer resources with bloodthirsty programs like Word and Excel. Really good!

Wormux
http://www.wormux.org/wiki/en/index.php
Image
A legal clone of Worms. Nice vector based graphics, selectable characters (worms, swines, hedgehogs, firefoxes, thurnderbirds & co), and reasonable sized arsenal. Not as fun as original Worms, but still worth checking.

Supertux

Not a clone itself, but feels like Super Mario. Good for kids, has many levels. Ported to lots of hardware:
* GP2X
* Nokia 770
* Pocket PC
* Nintendo GameCube
* Sega Dreamcast

Besides Doomsday, there are other great recreated engines:

ScummVM

Image
I think it needs no introduction. Two words: Monkey Island (and much more)

CloneKeen
http://clonekeen.sourceforge.net/
Image
Reverse engineered engine of ID's old hit. Requires original data files.
Makes Keen work much smoother than in dosbox, and uses filters to refresh the graphics.
Works also with the free shareware version.

OpenJazz
http://treacle.hewwo.com/jazz/oj/
Image
Like CloneKeen but for Jazz Jackrabbit. Makes Jazz work on Windows/Linux/console swithout an emulator.
Not finished, but playable.

So, thats it for now. I hope you forgive me big screenshots.

It's not a remake of an old game, but a "sequel" of a free title, and it's great:

Knytt Stories. Good times, very mellow platforming stuff.

That Doomsday looks awesome. I already have most of the Doom WAD files, so I'll give it a shot.
