That kinda sucked. There was some truth to it, though.

Wow, EA has Mac covered.

Do Macs have good enough video to play Doom 3 and stuff though?

Definitely... the minimum video in an iMac (standard destop) is ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT with 128MB memory whereas the minimum requirement for Doom 3 is ATI Radeon 8500/nVidia GeForce 3 or better. The MacBook (laptop) does not seem to have a good enough video card, however, the same is true with standard Dell laptops. With both Mac or Dell you can opt to spend more for a more advanced machine... Mac offers MacBook PRO and Dell with High Performance Precision.

I find a sick twisted humor that you are comparing Macs to Dell systems. Dell is the craptacularly overpriced and overhyped PC company... oh wait... I guess that IS a perfect comparison!

And, the AMD/ATI HD 2400XT is not a gaming card. It's a budget ($60) video card. It gives you basic graphics and video decoding.

For fun let's compare the HD 2400XT to a GeForce 6600GT, which was a mid-range card from two generations ago. (2004) Nowadays, you can find them on ebay for cheaper than the 2400XT.

Doom 3 (running at 1024x768 no AA/AF, Trilinier Filtering, Max Quality)

2400XT = 27 FPS (Frames Per Second*)
6600GT = 85.8 FPS

Holy shit, a budget gaming card from 3 years ago has double the performace as this brand new 2400XT!?!

Here's a benchmark comparison using 3DMark05:

2400XT = 2955
6600GT = 4155

(*For optimum playing of First Person Shooters such as Doom 3, Half Life 2, F.E.A.R, etc. 60 Frames Per Second or higher is recommended.)

If you want a decent graphics card for your Mac, you will be spending about an extra $150 - $600 for it. (You would want at LEAST a AMD/ATI HD 2600XT or a GeForce 8600GT)

I did the comparison with Dell because it's the most popular brand of PC and probably highest selling. That's my only reason for comparing it. I've never owned, nor do I want, a Dell. Do you have a preferred manufacturer?

Was that true when Doom 3 came out though? It seemed like the usual Macs I saw had kind of weak video.

My preferred manufacturer is Gateway. My reason is because it does not suck. That's good enough for me.

I guess when Doom 3 came out even normal comp owners couldn't play it, but it seems like when it came out for Mac specifically I knew noone with a mac who could run it at all. I did know some WoW players on Macs though, but they said it was all choppy, I dunno. I guess Apple puts better Video in now? Mac minis seemed to have some intel crap.

Check my revised post above for a graphics breakdown. Keep in mind that the same holds true for a Mac or a PC. The better the gaming ability, the more you have to pay.

My prefered PC company?

That's easy, CTech. That's the name of my computer company. (I am even licensed.) That I do as a 2nd job.

Here. How about I will list some basic specs, and give a final cost if buying at a couple different PC vendors?

Let's do a:
Intel e6600 Core 2 Duo
eVGA CK122-A1 SLI Motherboard
4Gb DDR2 800Mhz
500Gb Hard Drive
DVD Burner
Nvidia 8800GTX 768MB Video Card
24" LCD Monitor with =<6ms response time.

DELL = $3,369
CyberPower (www.cyberpowerpc.com)= $2,259
CTech = $1,940

Equiv. Mac I just built at the Mac Store = $2,749 (note, this only has a HD 2600 Pro, a $99 card, there was no option for anything higher.)

See what I mean?

(And, if anyone ever wants to buy a PC and you are not building it yourself, I highly recommend CyberPower. Awesom company, and as you can see, far better pricing then Dell.)

CP laptops are bad ass! They have nice prices. I build my PC's but if I got another lappy I'd get from them.

Get an ASUS c90 chassis, and you'll be set. Awesome laptop. Holds desktop Core 2 Duos cpus, and has a nVidia 8600GT w/ 512MB.

I have to build a new PC, but right now my rig with the IBM case and the oldass motherboard with 2gb of RAM and a 512mb ATI Radeon X1550 is fine for me.

I hate all these Mac vs. PC discussions. It's like being back in the 50s again. But ignoring my brief stint as a vampire, I've had lots of good gaming experiences with my Macs. More than my PC anyway... I'm looking at you Condemned! Evil

Well, yeah, games like solitare and mindsweeper don't crash very often, nor have steep system requirements. Bell

I've had some pretty good luck with PC games. The only times mine have fucked up is when their either newer than my PC can handle (which is rare), or old as hell (in the case of MechWarrior 2).

Fun fact: I only play Office Solitaire on the show's official NBC website. The link is even in my browser bar.
