It was a based on a live action 70s TV show starring Larry Storch of F Troop fame. Ghost Busters lasted only 15 episodes, but when the Reitman Ghostbusters movie found success, Filmation decided to develop a cartoon based on the old TV show. Amd by based on the TV show, I mean the two main characters were the sons of the two main characters of the original show. Tracy The Gorilla, the team's third member, appeared in both live action show and cartoon. Few, if any, of the villains from the cartoon came from the TV show. Prime Evil, the main antagonist from the cartoon, was never on the live action show.

The existence of the Ghostbusters cartoon is why the cartoon based on the movie was called Real Ghostbusters.

Ghostbusters was sometimes billed as The Original Ghostbusters, but this claim was false. Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy appeared as ghostbusters under the employ of Ajax Ghost Exterminators in the 1937 cartoon "Lonesome Ghosts".

I never understood how a gorilla would be any help in hunting ghosts anyways. Do gorillas even understand the concept of the supernatural?

A friend of mine pointed out that there's actually a double meaning in the title. As we all remember, there was an episode where the Ghostbusters went to Hollywood to oversee the making of a Ghostbusters movie. By the show's end, they're watching it and it is the Ghostbusters film we all know and love. Thereby saying that the movie is a movie based on THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS. I love that idea.

BTW, say what you will about the other Ghost busters, but Filmation is awesome as is Lou Scheimer.
