Y'know, Microsoft's insistence that there's no problem with the defect rate of the 360 irks the hell out of me. A LOT of people are getting the red ring of death. It's practically an expectation of most users at this point. I love the system and it houses some amazing games, but goddamn.

Usually red rings mean at least a week of no gaming while you ship your box back to Microsoft, but some big thinker has come up with a new and unique way to save your box from an untimely death utilizing nothing more than two common, ordinary towels.
1. Detach your hard drive, disconnect your controllers and place the console on a flat surface.
2. Rest your Xbox 360 on a towel and then place a second towel over it. Make sure that every side is completely covered with the towels.
3. From the outside of the towels, turn on your console and leave it on for ten to fifteen minutes before turning it off.
4. Wait fifteen minutes and turn your console back on. It should now run just fine.

Intriguing. What's the logic behind it?

If the 360 was shite, I wouldn't be so upset that mine just died. I guess I'm gunna be 360-less for awhile till a replacement gets here. At least its free to fix it/replace it. But this prolly means no more Halo 3 Beta for me. Thats what I was playing before it did this.
That towel thing sounds wierd....i'll have to try it, but how does that work?

I would advise against opening it if you're going to send it in for repairs. That is if you're sending it under warranty. If you're sending it in, and paying out the ass for it, then it's fair game.
Also, learn what sarcasm is, and wash your hair.

I knew you were being sarcastic... I just got out of the shower in that pic and the flash made it all funky! I did wash it. =) I didn't open it nor was I planning to, since I still have a warranty.
I called for a coffin, I guess I'll have it fixed in a few weeks. I told them the DVD drive has definetly been scratching games (it's horizontal) so I guess I'll find out about that. Apparently I can get my Viva Pinata replaced too. At least all that's free, can't complaign too much, but I am bummed out it died. I didn't just play games on it, that was my media center and junk too.

I have no idea why that towel trick works, but anything's worth trying if there's a chance of salvation of such a good system.

What if I stick towels on it THEN send it in? Imagine as all the MS employees gasp in horror when the AllahBox is unleashed!

The towel thing accually works. My buddy Eddie did it when his 360 died, figuring that he had nothing to lose. He wrapped it up tight, powered it on, and let it sit. He said that when he came back about 15 minutes later, the console was near burning hot to the touch. He gave it about 30 minutes to cool off. Hooked it back up, and it has worked like a charm ever since.
So, strange solutions do sometimes work.
I remember years ago there was a certain model of Maxtor hardrives, that would fail, due to the heads coming out of alignment, and the most common solution to fix them was dropping them on the floor from about three feet. Worked almost every time.

I'm tempted to try the towel thing so I can at least play some of it till it's gotta go back, but how the hell does that work?? does it resolder the stuff or something?

My guess is that it helps to properly seat all of the connectors on the PCB. So, yeah, it resolders, basically.
