I just got back from watching this movie a while ago, and I must say it was better than the first two. Of course, that isn't saying much since I didn't care for any of the movies in the trilogy, with the only reason I went tonight being that my friends thought it would cheer me up after my girlfriend of 4 years split with me. Taking someone to a movie they don't want to see isn't the best way of doing something like that. Anyways...
My friend, who liked the trilogy, also agrees that the third one is better than the other two. So, while I would give it a 4/10, anyone who actually liked the other two would probably have this one closer to an 8/10 or higher.
So...yeah. Without going into much detail (or any, for that matter), I give it a 4. Many useless plot twists, useless characters, and useless "funny parts" that weren't truly funny.

I really enjoyed it, and held off on the Calypso V.D. jokes until the movie was over.

Sorry to hear about you and the gf. Go get drunk and rent some strippers. Usually works for me.
As for the movie, I thoroughly disliked the 2nd one so I'm not sure I want to see the 3rd. I may be coerced into it at some point on DVD, but I'd rather not pay 10 bucks when my only motivations to see it are Johnny Depp's ability and Keith Richards' cameo.

That immediately makes me remember Aliens Vs. Predator and Collateral... Yeah, seeing movies after events like that... Not a good idea.
I saw Pirates III today and I actually didn't like it as much as the first two. Basically my biggest problem with the film was how most of the character arcs were resolved (and not the ones in the last five minutes). Overall, the characters, story, and emotion all suffered due to either neglect or mismanagement. My other problem is the lack of fun. Except for the uber-fight at the end, there wasn't any real fun sequences like the first two. Not to say there weren't jokes, cause there were, but there wasn't the Indiana Jones-style action fun. Nor did any of the stunts even match II in outrageousness.
My third problem was how the uber-fight between the pirates and the British came down to... TWO SHIPS! No, no, no, no! Even the second Death Star had the rebel cruisers fighting star destroyers while Lando and Wedge were blowing the shit out of the reactor. Even Zion was being torn to shit while Neo and Smith were DBZing Mega City. Even the American revolutionaries charged forward while Jason Isaacs kicked Mel Gibson's arse. I don't need crosscutted action, but I need to know that those ships are fighting each other in the background. Nope. In fact, they don't fight at all. Psh!
It's not a bad film, but I was disappointed.
Oh, but Johnny Depp was the shit. In fact, the more Depp, the better. No complaints on his (or Richards) side at all!

Saw it tonight.
I felt like Jack Sparrow was really poorly used in the movie. A lot of his scenes were excessively goofy and he really didn't have a whole lot going on. Keith Richards kicked all kinds of ass though.
My favorite characters in this movie were probably Elizabeth Swann and Captain Barbosa. Sao Feng was pretty bad ass too. Will was a dick. Governor Swann and Norrington were rather poorly used.
And yeah, a lot of the story arcs were pretty poorly resolved. The ending to the whole Will/Elizabeth love thing was super lame.

To this day one of my friends hasn't forgiven me for doing this to him with AVP.

It seemed like only a matter of time.
And to add to the 2 1/2 year old discussion above, the first one was the best, then the 2nd, then the third. Hopefully that trend is broken with the fourth.

Has the forth anything ever been better than what came before it? I mean Rambo IV was good, but not as good as 2. Rocky IV was good, but not better than 1. Star Trek IV was great, but not better then II.
And, those are really the only three example of the 4th film being good at all. (Star Wars doesn't count, as the real 4th movie was "Phantom Meanace", I don't care what numbers they slapped on the opening scrolls.)

No worries, I am def. not the type to get pissy about necroed threads and the like....
I agree fourth installments usually can't compete with the originals, if this ends up being the 2nd best in the series I would be pleased....and though I agree Rocky I is the best film in the set, for some reason I always end up watching IV

The third film just kept going and going and going and going and going and going and going and going and going and going and going and going and going and going and going.
I hope that they don't cover much of the 2nd and 3rd films plot lines and they focus more on a new story.

Really, as long as they bring back Geoffrey Rush, they'll have my ten bucks. I'll go see almost anything he's in, just because its him.
I do really like Johnny Depp too, but for some reason Sparrow is one of the only characters of his that I've never really cared about. I don't hate him or anything, just totally indifferent. I have no idea why.

Are any of us really surprised...
EDIT: After having read the linked page, I really hope they don't end up using that book's plot. It sounds kind stupid and pulpy.

from what i recall, i think Depp has a 5th movie contract w/the Sparrow character. so, if this does well, you will def see a 5th movie.

This
Also, the second one was my favorite. The third one was too long, I mean, there was a fight between boats in the midle of the maelstrom, and I was falling asleep. There must be something wrong with that

Johnny Depp Considering Dropping Out of "Pirates of the Caribbean 4"?
Just one week after appearing at D23 Expo to make several big announcements, Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook has now been fired by Disney CEO Bib Iger after 38 years of service.
"I have loved every minute of my 38 years that I have worked at Disney," said Cook. "From the beginning as a ride operator on Disneyland's steam train and monorail to my position as chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. During my time at the Studio, we have achieved many industry and Company milestones. Our talent roster is simply the best in the business. I believe our slate of upcoming motion pictures is the best in our history. But most of all, I love the people, my colleagues, my teammates, who are the most talented, dedicated and loyal folks in the world."
Apparently after receiving the news, Cook immediately called Johnny Depp to break the news. "He said, 'I'd like you to hear it from me before you hear it from someone else or read it,'" Depp revealed. "He said today was my last day. He didn't give me a reason."
The actor said it was because of Cook that he ended up working with Disney in the first place and the reason he committed to the "Pirates" films. "He said, 'We're thinking about doing this 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie,'" Depp recalled. "I said I was in. This was before there was a script or anything."
As for the fourth planned "Pirates" movie, Depp said while he has a potential deal in place that will depend on how good the script is, his passion for the project at the moment has been severely dampened by the news that Cook will no longer be around. "There's a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm at the moment," Depp said. "It was all born in that office." |

I can't say I blame him for considering leaving. Friends aside the pirates movies have been on a steady nosedive anyway since the sequel, there have to be a ton of better projects for him to do, but I think we all know we will see a pirates 4.

I have some sort of unknown draw to Johnny Depp. It doesn't really matter what he's in I always enjoy his characters. I think he may be my favorite actor. Tom Cruise has been dethroned.

oh for the love of mike, a 4th Pirates now. Really, it ended on a high note. Make something using Jack Sparrow, don't dig up a trilogy that ended on a decent note. And if you can't get Depp, don't freaking try then. Sparrow was the only character worth following through the whole series.
Really, Hollywood is getting impatient now, movies like Spider-man and Pirates have had the 3rd done how long now? 2, 3 years? I hope pirates 4 don't get off the ground and if it somehow still passes by without Depp, then it will ubersuck.

Ian McShane should never be in a movie where he isn't allowed to say cocksucker over and over again.
