Oh, to be in Finland...
His voice is fairly close in awesome to Tony Kakko's- the original vocalist for Fullmoon, for those not acquainted with Sonata Arctica- though his stage presence isn't quite as good. But hell, that's something that improves with experience ^^ I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for this guy's albums in the near future.
Oh yeah, first post xD I'm a noob here, though I've been reading the site for a while now.

I guess he has a decent power metal voice, other that, I don't think it's really special.
And Jarko Ruutu ruins Finland.

Well, I am also pointing out (see the Topic heading.) that you would never see someone do songs like these on American Idol. All we get are people trying to be the next Mariah Carey or other pop diva. Nobody just goes up there and rocks. I wish I could get on just so when I made it onto TV, I would perform Ugly Kid Joe just because I can.
(I do "Neighbor" and "Everything About You" whenever I go out to do karaoke.)
There's no way I would win, or even make it past the first round, but it would be sweet to see an episode where they have to "beep" censor somebody's song.

That's a complete lie! Syd - I mean Bo Bice - rocked it a few years back! And Constantine tried that same year, but since he was an egotistical tool, his fame was cut short.

It's not that there aren't people who try, it's that they're given absolute crap categories to choose songs from. I mean, with a country music theme in place, it's kinda hard to rock out :/
Part of why I liked Rockstar so much better ^^;

That's not entirely true... there are rock-ish country songs you can do, like Every Mother's Nightmare's cover of "Long-Haired Country Boy" or ZZ Top's "Tush".
Or Skynyrd.

Yeah, but you don't have any Metal, Hard Rock, Power Rock, Death Metal, Nu Metal, or Grunge.
I would love for somebody to kiss ass, and sing all kinds of boring shite the judges like. (80's Pop ballads and the like.) And, then when he is in the top 12 or whatever, whip out a Megadeth song. Or better yet, GWAR.

Well the focus of the show is SINGING, so Death Metal, Nu Metal, and Grunge are kind of disqualified from being categories. Especially Grunge.

Nu Metal is a shortlived genre consisting of bands like Godsmack, System of a Down, and Limp Bizkit. Basically, any band formed in the mid-to-late 90s that called themselves metal but lacked the talent of real metal bands such as Megadeth and Maiden.

Eh? I always considered Godsmack rock. I don't really like genres, it's too easy to categorize a clusterfuck of music and then dislike it for no reason.
All that said, Megadeth has transcended genres, and simply became Megadeth.

Not all grunge is incoherant screaming. What about grunge pioneers such as Chris Cornell of Sound Garden, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Nathan Kaatrud of Urge Overkill, Thom Yorke of Radiohead (They started out as grunge.), and to a lesser extent, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam.

Well, the question then is what the difference between grunge and alternative is, and if grunge ever really existed outside of Nirvana and Alice in Chains.
Soundgarden, I'd definitely consider rock and Pearl Jam too.
And Sonic Youth raided my cooler.

Grunge music is generally characterized by "dirty" guitar, strong riffs, and heavy drumming. The "dirty" sound resulted both from the common use of heavy guitar distortion and feedback, and from a stylistic change in the standard method of playing punk rock. Grunge fuses elements of hardcore punk and heavy metal into a single sound, although sometimes it is performed with more emphasis on one or the other. Grunge bands were noted for their punk mentality and attitudes, and the music shares with punk its raw sound, fast tempos, and often vocal delivery. However, grunge also involves slower tempos, dissonant harmonies, and more complex instrumentation reminiscent of heavy metal.
The lyrics concern similar themes such as social alienation, apathy, entrapment and a desire for freedom. They are typically angst-filled — anger, frustration, ennui, fear, depression and drug addiction are often explored in grunge songs. The lyricism bears similarities to those of punk and the perceptions of Generation X. A number of factors may have influenced these lyrics. Many grunge musicians and fans displayed a general disenchantment with the state of society and discomfort with social prejudices. They were often identified as 'slackers' and drug use was widespread. Also, many grunge musicians began their careers as teenagers or young adults, when feelings of angst are common. Nonetheless, not all grunge songs dealt with such themes: Nirvana's satirical "In Bloom" is a notable example of more humorous writing. In fact, several grunge songs are filled with either a dark or fun sense of humor as well (for example, Mudhoney's "Touch Me, I'm Sick" or Tad's "Stumblin' Man"), though this often went unnoticed by the general public. Humor in grunge often satirized glam metal (for example, Soundgarden's "Big Dumb Sex") and other forms of rock music that were popular during the 1980s.[2]
Grunge concerts were known for being straightforward, high-energy performances. Grunge bands avoided the complex, high budget presentations that bands from other musical genres such as heavy metal were known for; complex light arrays, pyrotechnics, and other visual effects unrelated to playing the music were not part of the concerts. Stage acting was also generally avoided. Instead, the bands presented themselves no differently from any local band, using only their instruments and their own presence as visual "effects" (neither being budgeted higher than what was needed). However the concerts did have some level of interactivity. Fans and musicians alike would participate in stage diving, crowd surfing, headbanging, and pogoing, though the audiences at grunge concerts were best known for their extremely enthusiastic moshing. The mosh pits would be located close to the stage, allowing such interaction between the audience and the band.
Nirvana is generally credited for breaking the genre into the popular consciousness in 1991. The popularity of Nirvana's song "Smells Like Teen Spirit", from the album Nevermind, surprised the entire music industry. The album became a #1 hit around much of the world, and paved the way for more bands, including, most popularly, Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam, in fact, had released their debut album Ten a month earlier in August 1991, but album sales only picked up after the success of Nirvana. For many audiences then and later, grunge came to be almost totally associated with these two bands and their punky, rebellious attitude towards mainstream mores as well as cultural and social institutions. By 1993, other popular Seattle-based bands (most notably Alice in Chains and Soundgarden) would also become extremely successful. Some bands from other regions, such as Stone Temple Pilots from San Diego, Australia's Silverchair, and Great Britain's Bush also became popular by the mid-90s. |

STP and Bush are two other bands that I don't think fit very well into Grunge. STP was most definitely rock.

STP was heavily regarded as a "Pearl Jam" ripoff, when they first debuted. It took them awhile to shed that image, and stand out under their own talent.
