"Gamestop will be taking your old XBox 360s and original XBox units in trade, anticipating your desire to buy the new XBox 360 Elite. During this special, you will be able to get $250 for the premium unit, and $200 for the 360 core unit, but the cool news is that you will even be able to get $50 for your original XBox, deferring some of the cost to make the leap to the next generation.
This is really a cool deal, and it shows that Microsoft is either sensitive to the idea that they're going to anger a lot of people who just sunk a lot of money into the premium unit, or that they've been watching the forums of the gaming community, who are pretty pissed off about the whole thing. MS certainly must realize that they've got a lot of goodwill at the moment, and wouldn't want to squander it."

Damn. I'm so fucking glad that I chose to wait on buying a 360. Any cost news?
EDIT: Wikipedia says $500, which isn't too bad.

None as yet. A search on GameStop's site just gives the usual 360 units.

We've been hearing the usual $480 here, but after tax and all, it'll be closer to $500. I can't do the math at the moment.
479.99 + tax (5% here) = ???

$503.99
480 X .05 (5%) = 24
24 + 480 = 504
Or you can do 480 x 1.05 (Full amount + 5%) = 503.989

Just a heads up on some problems with the Elite:
* The Elite does not come with a cable to transfer info from your old 360 to your spanking new system. Microsoft's rationale is that the Elite is for new 360 owners, so no transfer should be needed. They are offering the cable for free for a limited time, if you want to fill out an authorization form.
* The transfer can only be performed once, and it blanks out your older, 20gig Xbox.
* Xbox Live Arcade game transfer is problematic. The games' digital rights management affects XBLA games transferred from regular 360s to Elites--even though the same person owns both.
* "While all of your Xbox Live Arcade games and Xbox Live Marketplace TV shows will transfer [to the Elite HDD], you will have to be connected to Xbox Live (to verify your identity) in order to access that content," the company said in a statement. "This process is permanent and we advise [you to] not transfer your data if you wish to access it while offline."

I imagine this would be problematic for the new stand alone 120GB HDD's as well, and rhey can't as easily use the excuse that the larger HDD's mainly for "new" customers as they can with the Elite. I hope Microsoft comes up with a better solution to this problem in the near future. Why not allow customers to redownload for free or at least reauthenticate their purchased digital content for offline use through some verification process while signed in to Xbox Live?

I imagine the problem would lie in that people could sign in at a buddies house and "redownload" a game on to their 360. It makes sense why it is a one time deal with the cable, kind of like cell phones you don't get to keep all your downloaded stuff if you get a new phone.
If you get the new stand alone 120 GB hard drive I would just keep the 20 GB harddrive in a safe place with all the other stuff on it. Thats just my take.
