Is anyone a huge fan of these? I've always just kind of looked at my friends obsessing over PC first-person shooters and laughed. Although recently I've been playing Tom Clancy games on my PC and having a little bit of fun, even though I'm getting dominated.

Which kind of brings an off-topic point... how the hell do some people get so good at PC-borne first person shooters? How much do some of these people play?

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us.

I am not a huge FPS fanboy. I really enjoyed Half-Life, and Doom 3 is fun for a few hours, but the majority of FPSs just bore me with their repetitiveness.

I do have friends, however, who have seemingly spent the last 7 or 8 years continuously playing CounterStrike. I mean, these kids wake up, play, eat lunch, play, eat dinner, play, and fall asleep around 4am. This is the summation of their entire lives. THAT is how they get ridiculously good at these types of games. You have to be hardcore and want to play and win more than anything else you would rather do in life. It's actually quite sad.

If there's a strong storyline, I will play anything.

My favorite FPS:

Riddick Butcher Bay, Doom 3, GoldenEye, Deus Ex 1+2.

An FPS needs to have a strong hook to get my interest. TimeSplitters 2 and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect are the best examples of this in recent memory. They had varied level design, humor, a ton of unlockables, and a separate mode filled with frustrating challenges to be completed.

Games like Halo, Unreal, and Counterstrike never drew me in, they're just so... generic. Give me something like Goldeneye, Deus Ex, Duke Nukem or Doom instead.

If there is not already such a thing, I would see to see a FPSRPG. I'm not sure how it would work, but being able to build upon things (levels, abilities, etc.) has always drawn me to games. I'm alright with the better of FPS's, such as Timesplitters, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Doom, and I honestly didn't mind Red Dead Revolver, but I would like to see RPG elements added into an FPS. With my luck, it already exists and I never found it. >_<

Deus Ex has some RPG elements. It has an ability advancement system similiar to the one in Diablo 2. It also has a deeply engaging storyline that allows you to make choices that lead to different game endings.

Deus Ex one and two are the best examples of FPSRPG I can think of. A friend of mine is designing an online FPSRPG game with some company, so expect that to hit the shelves in the future... probably a couple more years. Promises to be quite fun.

I just looked it up. Oh man. I NEED this game. NOW. I have no money, so I'm going to have to steal it. Can someone bail me out if I get caught?

If you live within 10 miles, I got your back. The first Deus Ex should be about $10 or less given the used video game market.

$10!? Hell, I might be able to have my friend pick that up and borrow it. Looks like I divert from criminal activity once again.

I was at GameStop today and they still had Deus Ex 2 brand new for the PC for $10. I got it new for $20 about six months ago and I can't even play it! Stupid graphics card...

Bless the X-box alternative to PC gaming.

I loved Deus Ex, however, having played it before I played System Shock 2, I believe I inadvertently spoiled the latter game for myself. My favorite FPS games are pretty much the classics; Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Unreal Tournament, Duke Nukem 3d, Blood, Shadow Warrior, Doom 2, Rogue Spear, Quake and a lot of half life mods such as The Specialists http://www.specialistsmod.net

I don't play online or competitively as much as I used to, but I was pretty hugely into the online gaming scene a while back. I just like finding competition, it's fun for me.

I like Specialists because of its extremely versatile and mobile movement system. There's a slot-based weight system that dictates the height of dives and flips you can achieve with your current weight. Low-slot setups, such as a pair of two pistols or a single pistol, allow for the full range of speed and dodging movement. Heavier setups such as assult rifles and shotguns don't allow for as much mobility, but pack a punch. The weapons are all pretty well balanced and a good player can use whatever they want for the most part, so the options are always open. There are a ton of guns, too, something like 9 handguns, 5 SMG's, 4 rifles, 5 shotguns, an m-60, a katana, combat knives, seal knives and kung fu. If you're interested in seeing what it's like in action, I have a couple videos I made:

http://www.teammerica.com/vid/murdar.avi
http://www.teammerica.com/vid/murdartwo.avi

First video is against bots, the second one is against real people online.

FPS's are about 3 thing in this order discluding multiplayer arenas
-Good Graphics

if you want a good puzzle rpg asspect to the game
Half life 2 and or
Fear
alot of versitility
Battlefield 2
doom 3 was ok
as far as fp games that has shown me something new
Condemed for the xbox 360 ( i know most of you dont want to hear that though
-also as i mentioned before, multi player. unless you are talkin about the n64 Multiplayer is online these days.

Condemned is a solid game through and through. Along with RE4, Thief III, and Eternal Darkness, it's one of the few game to actually make me jump. And yes, I've played the Silent Hill games.

condemed has it

its the first fps ive seen where you fall down
for that matter do anything off a linear motion other than jump or crouch
halo 2 had that feel a littlebit too. thats why graphics are key
the feeling of emersion

the other games you mentioned were good too

Yeah, I'd like to see more FPS games where taking a bullet actually causes a realistic physical reaction. I hate half life 2 for this. You get shot in CS:S and you're still standing up, are you kidding me? If I got shot I guarantee there'd be some physics involved besides me walking backwards slightly. I want to see games where after being shot you have to hoist yourself up with something in your surroundings like a table or a guardrail, while firing errantly back at your enemies, your vision blurry from shock and your hearing deafened by the roar of your veins pumping blood and the adrenaline rush. Now that's immersion.

Also, I'm tired of gunshots that are too quiet. Gunshots are rediculously loud and they reverberate through your body. I'm not asking for games to literally deafen you in real life, but I want at least some creative game magic that properly emulates that feeling you get when you fire an actual gun.

Half life made me jump and nearly gave me a goddamn heart attack.

Half life 2 was bland throughout, overhyped, linear as hell, completely non-revolutionary and irritating. The guns sucked, the shootouts sucked, the level design was sub-par. The game basically has no story. I dunno, my list of gripes with this game goes on endlessly and I hate valve and what they've become. I hope gabe newell chokes on a pizza hut box and dies.

absolutly
ive been saying that for years
for the battlefield games they actually came out with mods for all sorts of things like that
such as real gun physics
made them shoot more lifelike lowder and maybe a couple new guns
but i said back the why is it a mod
why didnt ea make it life like
who knows
but about getting knocked over
i knominate you for video game consultant
too bad i dont matter

You just made me cry a little Sad

However, SH really isn't a jumping game so much as unnerving. The last game to get me to jump was... "Land of the Dead: The Road to Fiddler's Green"!? WHAT!? Well, I haven't been playing a lot of games lately... actually "Land" is the first game I've bought this year.

You have to understand, I'm an RE fanboy. As such, I'm required to hate SH because people are always arguing over which franchise is better/scarier. Do I really hate SH? Absolutely not. But if this degrades into an RE vs. SH debate, I'll be quick to point that S and H are the first two letters of shit.

I didn't even know there was a Land of the Dead game...

I have a few questions:

1. What system is it on?
2. Do you get to fight King Koopa... I mean Dennis Hopper... I mean whatever the hell his character's name was?
3. Can you drive Dead Reckoning?

1. X-Box and PC. I've only played it on the PC.

2. He's in the game, but no.

3. BIG NO. You kinda drive one truck with a machine gun mounted on it, but alas... it's not the same. And the level sucks.

It's a prequel game that has almost nothing to do with the movie except how Dennis Hopper took over Fiddler's Green. I really wish the beginnings of Dead Reckoning were in it though... Sad

As for RE vs. SH

I hate people who need to debate this.

I'm the biggest fanboy of either series. I'm nerdy enough to analyze what the hell Wesker is even up to (what viruses he has, who he's working for, etc.). Then there's SH and I just love to play the series. Do I need to analyze who God really is and whether or not Pryamid Head is a figment of James' imagination. Hell no. I love to discuss religion and SH, but some people take that WAAAAAAAAAY to far. For me, it's the love I feel for a good book series. I just want to understand what I'm reading. RE is like a beautiful B movie series that builds and builds and will one day implode explaining nothing... kinda like how Umbrella fell apart.

I think someone should try and develop Stephen King's It into an FPS. Well, FPS isn't really the right term because there would be few if any guns. There was a lot of fucked up stuff in that book and I think the mythology could be adapted into a genuinely creepy game.

Since we seem to have tumbled into discussing games meet movies, has anyone else seen the trailer for Silent Hill's movie *shivers*? The way the trailer I saw ran you wouldn't even know it was based off a video game until a good 3/5th of the way when you start seeing the freaky stuff. I should mention i've never played any of the games, though I might go out and look for them now.

As for "It" being made into a game, maybe an action game like Zelda would be a more appropriate interface.

When you discuss FPS games, it's important to make the distinction of whether you prefer to play that FPS single player or multiplayer, IMO. Some games (like Unreal) are built around the multiplayer experience, so of course they are going to suck if you prefer single player FPS games.

As for me...

Single Player:
- F.E.A.R. (It wasn't scary like everyone said, and sure, bullet time has been done to death, but I dunno... it was the first FPS I'd played in a good long while that I actually felt compelled to finish. It was just plain fun shooting crap up in this game. The plot was alright, too, and I liked the ending.)
- Half Life 2 (The first half of Half-Life 2 isn't all that spectacular, but the second half certainly is. It creates an "experience" like no other FPS I've played. You really feel like you're in the middle of the struggle against the Combine, and that's a fairly awesome feeling.)
- Goldeneye (Back in the day, I played this game to death. While I can't really play it now, because the graphics make me sick, I unlocked all the codes for this game the legitimate way. That's how much time I wasted on this gem.)
- Perfect Dark (Not as good as Goldeneye IMO, but still pretty fun.)

Multiplayer:
- Day of Defeat: Source (I loved Day of Defeat 1.6, and I think Source makes the game better. Initially I was put off by some of the guns they removed, but I got over it. The way the Source engine handles is more suited to the type of realism that DoD tries to emulate, but it still retains enough arcadish elements to be captivating.)
- CounterStrike: Source (As a pub game (that is, a public server game), this game is terrible. The econ system is broke, the learning curve is steep, and hacking is way too prevalent. However, I've got a team together and this game can be quite fun as a serious competitive game. Of course, you still have to put up with lame ass hackers and that sort of thing, but this game is designed to be played in a serious competitive setting.
- Unreal Tournament 2004 (This was one of the first games that I seriously got into on my PC. If you're a newbie to the game, it can be very difficult to learn how to play, and not much fun at all. However, I was lucky in that I had several friends from my local LAN who were very good at the game and showed me the ropes. There are a ton of nuances to the game, and the community is much better than any other multiplayer game I've played. That's probably due in part to the fact that the community is so small, now. This is one of the few games that I can play and be crushed in and not care -- it's still fun for me to try and improve.)

I am kinda a FPS fanboy

I think black (on the PS2) Looks like a sweet game.

One thing i cant STAND about some of the scripts/streatagy guide/FAQS is they say the word "Clip" a lot when refearing to relaoding a firearm.

As a gun geek, this irks me to no end A magazine has moving parts. (read magazine spring/follower) and a "clip" (a real one) has no moving parts and just holds the cartridges (ammo) in place

The Firearm most famous for its real clips is the M-1-Garand.

Yeah...but if the game is some sort of sci fi "star trek" like game and they say clip it doesnt really bother me that much.

Probably the best FPS ever is Goldeneye. (flame away if you dissagree with me i stand by my pizza fueled love for that game)

With honerable mentions to Time splitters 2-3 (but not 1 i don't care for it)
Like Syd i think those games rock

Steve Gavazzi, Marc Green
Jon Sly! It's time to play... WHICH DOUCHEBAG SAID THIS????

"I'm curious -- which mountain climber was used in Cliff Hangers?"

Happy anniversary you fucking wankers!

perfect dark is better than goldenye in every single way imagineable, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm a big halo 2 fan, even though I know it doesn't offer anyhting fantastic. it's jsut alot of fun on XBL.

mostly I only play FPS if they're really special. farcry:instincts is a good example of this. the level editor is boss, and I ahve a lot of fun with the traps. Doom 3 is incredibly immersive, and I love that. timesplitters 2 was alot of fun as well. it's like perfect dark, but newer.

you guys should check out Gunz if you like games liek this. it's a third person shooter with some nifty character building and matrixy shit.

think of quake III combined with max payne and devil may cry.
