If you guys have attic space ( or build a weather-proof version), to keep it above street level, you should try a Gray-Hoverman antenna:
I built this one for the living room area that gets the worst reception in the house.
Even though it's just sitting on the porch in an enclosed section and has trees and turbines between it and the broadcast towers, it still picks up every channel (the hard-to-reach one I mentioned earlier comes in a tiny bit static-y, still watchable when it's not storming).
Realistically, you're supposed to use exact measurements to pick up the highest-quality signal for the channel range you want to receive, but I just eyeballed the measurements for mine.
