The guy did it on purpose. That's somewhat dissappointing. it would have been funnier if he had to get the question wrong in order to get the threeway.

He's not the first person to intentionally create, or at least offer, a tie. When you're ahead like that while you can wager the extra dollar for the win, it's only one dollar and if you're right you get the money no matter what the other people wagered, so it's basically a "professional courtesy" to give up that one dollar and let the other people get some money too. Ken Jennings wagered in such a way several times in his 20,000 game winning streak.

I was was ticked that it was the one night I didn't watch Jeopardy!, but then again, I was at my friend's house playing Twilight Princess for the first time, so I guess I was better off.

It is a pretty neat happenstance though.
