WHAT!?

Seriously, I have no idea what you wanted from "Red Dragon" except for a younger Hannibal.

Actually, you'll get that by the end of this year or next with "Young Hannibal" based on a Thomas Harris book that he still hasn't finished writing.

Both Hannibal and Red Dragon sucked ass... I hate how they ruin Hannibal as character by making him seem like some romantic bad guy. I fucking hate it when the director/writer fucks up masterworks of original writers like Harris. And NO way in hell am I going to see the "Hannibals young years: How the Nazi ate my little sister ".

Technically, Harris wrote that backstory. It's his original work, not Hollywood messing up. My problem comes from Hollywood making the movie before Harris has time to write the book. Want to know why "Hannibal" the book isn't good? Because it's rushed as hell.

"Red Dragon" is first a romantic horror film. Not about Lecter being a romantic, but the Tooth Fairy*. Lecter just so happens to be the most popular character in Harris' universe, so the film version decided to put Lecter in a couple more scenes. I thought they were nice scenes and didn't distract from the main story (*which debatably is really about Norton's character getting back inside the mind of a killer).

Mann's version is very good. But it plays like "Miami Vice". I love the In a Gadda Da Vida ending, but it's campy as hell... especially the editing. "Red Dragon" is an A-list version of a B-movie. Unlike other treatments like that, I thought "Red Dragon" came off as a successful romantic, horror, psychological thriller. So much so I saw it three times in theaters... Good lord, I did too. Embarrassed

While I don't expect to like "Young Hannibal", I'll still end up seeing it. I'm a sucker for franchises. I'd watch "House of the Dead 12" if they got that far... ew... I would too. Crying

Hannibal the book was WAY different from the movie and Harris was only within the making of the movie as councelor for views about characters, that they tried pathetically squeeze in. Red Dragon would have been better if they had used the time to tell more about Dolarhyde's background. But no...

"Hannibal" the book is very different from the movie, but the book is worse than the movie IMO. I really blame the fact that Harris had to deliver the book before the movie was made. I don't think he had time to completely finish the book, so there's this weird ass ending. Granted, most of the book is pretty badly plotted.

"Red Dragon" also spent a lot more time on the Tooth Fairy's backstory than "Manhunter" did.

Do you need it spelled out for you?

The scene you're refering to has context clues to his background involving his mother. That's what those voices are. We see the house he inherited and from it we can pretty much guess this guy's life. We know about his career from a later scene and that he had surgery done.

Later, the FBI spells out his background and profile. The album which The Tooth Fairy kept gives insight into his character and clues to his childhood.

Trust me, there was way more backstory than in "Manhunter". I don't think we got any in "Manhunter" actually.

They just speak gibberish about Dolarhyde, and those crappy scenes that give, what you call clues are fucking pathetic. Anyone who hasn't read the book can only swing his/hers arms wildly and cry out " WTF ?! "

Question

I've seen way more confusing movies than "Red Dragon". In fact, "Red Dragon" is about as confusing as "Eraser". "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children" for one is a movie that is way more "confusing" by your definition (anyone who hasn't played the game, really wouldn't get the movie. I know, five people just said it was the crappest video game movie they've seen yet {two of which saw "Silent Hill" Shocked} ).

In my three times of watching "Red Dragon", I did not see any arm waving whatsoever. I actually look for it. The movie I saw with the most entertaining arm waves from the audience: "Resident Evil". This guy in a suit in front of me did not like that film at all. I enjoyed every minute watching that man suffer.

I would hate to see how you'd handle a movie like "Syriana" or even a show like "Lost". Now that I think about it, Mission: Impossible. Case in point: "Lost" as a "work relationship" show? Part of me wants to laugh and part wants to cry.

I'm just gonna spend my two cents backing up Tebor.

Except for the part about the "Hannibal" movie being better than the book -- I disagree there. But that's a personal taste thing. While I despised the movie when I first saw it (shortly after reading the book), a little distance between it and the novel has enhanced my enjoyment somewhat.

I've seen Lost, and in my opinion it's recycled idea from much older novel.
That series is typical : Work relationship crap into mystery island .. SNORE !

I really didn't care for either the book or movie of "Hannibal", so it's picking the lesser of two evils for me. I just really, really, really hate the way the book ends.

True that. Actually, my mother and sister LOVE the book ending.

And I love cake. Rolling Eyes

"Hannibal Rising" has finally come out, which means this thread gets a ressurrection.

I actually rather dug the film. I can see why people hate it, but it's not as bad as people say. It's not a slasher film, it's not that violent, Hannibal is charming, and it's a little more meritable than a snuff/revenge film.

I'm also a sucker for anything prequel-y. My guilty pleasure came from a scene when Hannibal puts on a Samurai mask which bears a more than stricking resemblance to his jail mask in "Silence"; it made no sense, but I don't care. I also loved the boars running around. Very Happy

Edit: Was I high? "Hannibal Rising" is AWESOMELY BAD! It is more bad than people say, but that's what makes it so fun. (2/27/08 ).
