There's a new handheld from Nintendo called the 2DS. It comes out on October 12 in red or blue, priced at $129.99. No 3D! Just 2D. It plays all currently available 3DS games, but doesn't have a screen that shows 3D.
You had better have some gangsta-ass pockets for this thing.
It comes in a slate-type form factor and has all the same hardware features as the 3DS (touch screen, controls, etc.), and still has backwards compatibility with all DS games. Wireless? Still good. Just not 3D.
Nintendo will begin showing off the 2DS this October in a tour of malls across North America. |

I don't like the design, I like the idea though. A budget system right before Pokemon drops seems like a nuclear missile aimed right at Vita.

The lack of 3D will probably mean that it will have the battery life of the DS Lite, which would fix one of the biggest issues with the 3DS that still persists to some extent with the XL. I personally like the repositioned D-pad being closer to the center, which was my biggest issue with the original model. I'm guessing the idea to shape it as a slab rather than keep the bifurcated design of the original is to help it differentiate from every DS and 3DS model so far released. It would have been neat if they could have shaped it like the Game Boy brick and put all the controls on the bottom half, but that may have made it too tall. And of course, the much more attractive price will finally pick up anyone who wants Animal Crossing and Pokemon but not enough to drop MSRP on the current system.
I'm willing to withhold judgment as to how well the thing actually handles, but that doesn't work out, then Nintendo has not learned a thing since the Game Boy Micro.

"We made you, we can destroy you" - Nintendo on 3D gaming.
Wasn't sure if this was real or not. A sign of the times? Well leave luck to heaven. heh.

For what it's worth, Nintendo went on record saying that this is for children 6 and under. The 3D effect is labeled for children 7 and older. 3D has always been optional anyway.

I never play with the 3D on. Not because I don't enjoy it, but because it drains the battery at a rate of 3-4 times faster than if it's not on. And I can't be missing StreetPasses because my battery died. I need StreetPasses. All the StreetPasses. All the StreetPasses ever.

I don't use 3D either. It strains my eyes too much, maybe because I don't wear my glasses while playing handhelds.

Actually, thanks to the upgraded way that SpotPassing works, you can now completely defeat the point if you have a wireless router that will let you rename it and change its IP address. Then it's just a matter of finding the compiled spreadsheets people have made for locations.

I don't use the 3D effect on mine, either. Still, this looks like a neat idea for the younger crowd. My friend has been considering getting one for his son, but the current prices have held him back.

All of my idiot friends on facebook are acting like this the dumbest thing in the world fellating themselves for realizing how superior they are for publicly proclaiming they're not going to buy one. And you know what? I'm not going to get one either, because I'm not in the demographic this is aimed at. But just because I'm not going to buy one doesn't mean I think it makes anyone look like anything less than an idiot to proclaim "LOL, I literally -- like LITERALLY -- had to look up if August Fools was a thing when I saw this announced. Oh Nintendo, why would anyone think it was smart to make something for children when it's obvious that I, a tremendously overweight grown man with an undue sense of self-righteousness and preposterous overestimation of the validity of my own opinions and thoughts brought on by two decades of overzealous anti-bullying campaigns, will not purchase this thing made for children."

Given that I've been wanting a DS (but couldn't afford one) and I have absolutely zero interest in playing any of the games in 3D, this is pretty neat. I'm thin-

Remember that the Big N says their 3D effects aren't supposed to be used by young kids. And it isn't something that everyone likes anyways. It hurts my eyes, personally. So it's not as silly of an idea as it sounds - make a version without the 3D for people who don't like or can't use it.
Not that I would buy it. That thing's a friggin brick. Run out of hinges during 3DS XL production or something, Nintendo? Why can't it fold up?

Jesus, just noticed that it doesn't fold. How are you realistically supposed to walk around with that? I retract my previous statement.

The common argument is that children break hinges or something, and so the tablet-like shape makes it more durable in that regard. The common counter-argument is that the Game Boy Advance SP was very popular with all ages and it had a hinge of dubious quality that nonetheless didn't have the same problem.

At first when I saw this I thought "...why?".
Now that I have looked at the price, I think this is a really good idea, and should attract a lot of people looking for a very competitively priced console. The lack of a hinge detracts a bit from it, though.
As for me, I will likely never want to buy the console due to the lack of 3D and a hinge. I'm looking towards eventually getting a 3DS XL to replace my 3DS*.
*eventually means quite some time after I get a Wii U, if I get a Wii U. Otherwise, I have no clue. Christmas, maybe?
