http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/05/10/if-metro-last-light-ranger-mode-is-the-way-it-was-meant-to-be-played-why-isnt-it-included-for-all-players-we-ask-koch/

"Ranger Mode was added to Last Light’s precursor, Metro 2033 after launch as “a direct response to the demands of the hardcore Metro community.” It removes the HUD, makes enemies tougher and increases the scarcity of ammunition, which can also be used as currency in the Metro world. It sounds like a big feature. The ad phrasing makes it sound essential."

So it's the definitive way to play the game, but you have to pay 5 bucks to unlock it? Fucking LOL.

Could be worse. Could be the original BlazBlue, which wanted $8 apiece for "bonus" characters on the disc.

There was a basic hard mode in Metro 2033. It was difficult and well-balanced. It forced you to conserve your ammunition, and play stealth around people, and work around non-human enemies' weaknesses. "Survivalists" i.e. nerds who re-read Zombie Survival Guides 10 times each whined that there wasn't some way that they couldn't impress everyone on Youtube complained. Ranger Mode in Metro 2033 was total bullshit. It was interesting to have to conserve ammo more, but the enemies would go into full alert if your eyeballs rubbed against your eyelids a little too hard. I remember it also adding some weird weapons that if you didn't use them, you could still exploit their exitence to make more money and break the game. It was not play-tested and completely not fun. The basic hard mode was well-tested and balanced and rewarding to finally play through. I don't give a damn, loved 2033, and am looking forward to Last Light.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

game companies have been getting away with this kind of stuff for years now and it only seems to be getting worse. but i guess basic business sense would tell you that if people are going to pay extra for this kind of shit then make them pay extra. to me it is slowly ruining the "industry" but oh well. i think the only piece of DLC i ever purchased was something for the original star wars knights of the old republic that gave you different light saber crystals or something-it was ages ago.
