Truth be told, if the show didn't evolve into something more clever, it probably would have died out in 2000.

This is truth. If it would have stayed firmly in the first season style, it wouldn't have lasted more than a few seasons. It would have gotten old fast.

I am glad it survived. The first season style humor still gives me a few chuckles now and then.
