"The Fox Engine was announced by Kojima Himself a while ago and was even put up against the Unreal 4 Engine and Square Enix’s new engine during the first few months of heavy “next generation” console speculation and it is still seen today, especially after the reveal trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, as a prime example of one of the most powerful graphical engines built to date.

So what does this mean? The Fox Engine belongs to Kojima. Kojima was at the VGAs and people around him were seen wearing The Phantom Pain/Moby Dick Studios t-shirts. Moby Dick Studios has never made a game and its website (with hardly anything on it–click HERE) didn’t even exist until just recently. Its sole member is Joakim Mongren.

Rearrange the letters in Joakim and you have Kojima, as in Hideo Kojima, the legendary creator of the Metal Gear franchise that debuted on the MSX Home Computer all the way back in 1987. The main protagonist of this Phantom Pain game looks, moves (yes, I’ve played a lot of Metal Gear, can you tell?), and acts like a Snake.

Solid Snake? Naked Snake? Liquid Snake? Some other Snake? Who knows? However, we’re here to go over what we do know. And based on what we’ve seen here at the VGAs, we pretty much know that this is our first look at a new Metal Gear title.

Much credit goes to the folks over at the NeoGaf forums who cracked the “Metal Gear Solid V” case which revealed the words hidden in the Phantom Pain logo’s negative space. It only took them a few minutes to figure this out. How long did you think this Phantom Pain business was going to stay Phantom Pain, Kojima?

Only teasing. You’re a trooper for trying, but Metal Gear fans will be Metal Gear fans. Another fun aspect of the trailer is certainly the horror element. What does this mean? Metal Gear has gone down the horror road before with boss fights like The Sorrow from MGS3 and ghost pictures in almost every installment of the game.

But this seems to be a much more direct approach complete with little girls creepily standing at the end of dark hallways, men bursting into flames, demon unicorns, and just an overall eerie appeal through the entirety of the trailer.

Whatever’s going on here, it seems to be something big. Who is our main character? Why is he missing his left arm? Did you see the white flower petals fluttering in the beginning of the trailer? Does this mean The Boss going to make a return? Are we in Vietnam? WWII? The future? Will this be the story of the assembly of the legendary Cobra Unit, or the fall of Frank Jaeger aka Gray Fox?

Some believe this is simply a marketing technique to get Ground Zeroes out there. But if so, why all the secrecy and blatant misdirection? It also looks like Colonel Volgin (Metal Gear Solid 3) is on fire for a brief moment in the hallway. Are these Big Boss flashbacks? Is that a banged up Frank Jager or Master Miller helping him around the facility?

It’s too early to tell, but never too early to speculate. Metal Gear has been and forever will be one of the gaming giants of storytelling and if this trailer is any indication, the team over at Kojima Productions (oops, I mean Moby Dick Studios) isn’t going to quit upholding that title any time soon."

Nergnom Kojima?

[SPOILER:9002dacd41]He pulled this gag before, in Snatcher with the character Random Hajile, a.k.a. Elijah Modnar, a principal character in the plot's resolution.[/SPOILER:9002dacd41]

I want to see some kind of remake for the MSX game Metal Gear 2. I liked that game enough to play it twice in a row. I can't remember the last game I played through more than once that isn't a shmup.

I'm not a bad enough dude, but I am an edgy little shit. I'll do what I can.

Interesting that the "Snake" in the video wakes up without a hand. I at least think this won't be Solid/Naked Snake for that reason. Maybe it won't even be an MGS game? At any rate, it does look really cool. I was really getting into the atmosphere of the video, especially the part where "Snake" is trying to sift through the crowd of people to get out of the way of the gunmen.

The video honestly felt too vague for me to really speculate too much, but whether it's a new Metal Gear game or a new property altogether, I'm quite intrigued.

Also, this was plastered all over the place at the VGA awards. Most home viewers didn't even notice it was the anniversary:

I think this is all pretty obvious now, and it was really cool seeing all the pieces of this puzzle. Can't be 100% positive that it's V and not Ground Zeroes (or that Ground Zeroes wasn't just a code name for MGSV and this and that is one and the same) but still, it was an awesome trailer and it's cool to know that it's almost certainly a Metal Gear title regardless, with horror elements. To me, I'm betting that all we saw was the beginning of the game, a Virtuous Mission type thing, and was just a teaser for what's to come.

At any rate, "Moby Dick Studio" has only existed for 6 days, so to think we're not getting trolled here is ridiculous. Fascinating stuff.

Also, Psycho Mantis?

Oh wow, so it's probably some kind of nightmare that Snake has. Which I also kind of gathered by the presence of a flaming unicorn. Razz

I don't think that's anymore far fetched as say, a huge detached head made of fire chasing Snake screaming "FURYYYYY."

Good call. There's a boss in MGS4 where at one point you have to manipulate a couple of voodoo dolls to attack it, so I guess I shouldn't rule out any fantasy elements for the series.

Also a good call. MG2 is my favorite of the 2D Metal Gear games. I've actually been wondering when they'd remake the first two Metal Gear games in 3D.

Looking at those screenshots, I'm wondering if and how this is going to fit into series continuity. Given the presence of Volgin from MGS3, Psycho Mantis, and (I think?) Dr. Madnar from MG2, I'm wondering whose nightmare this is, if it is a nightmare.

If they give me a WWII game about the formation of the Cobra Unit, I will drown Konami in money

I think that is Kio Marv, not Madnar.
