"The Fox Engine was announced by Kojima Himself a while ago and was even put up against the Unreal 4 Engine and Square Enix’s new engine during the first few months of heavy “next generation” console speculation and it is still seen today, especially after the reveal trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, as a prime example of one of the most powerful graphical engines built to date.
So what does this mean? The Fox Engine belongs to Kojima. Kojima was at the VGAs and people around him were seen wearing The Phantom Pain/Moby Dick Studios t-shirts. Moby Dick Studios has never made a game and its website (with hardly anything on it–click HERE) didn’t even exist until just recently. Its sole member is Joakim Mongren.
Rearrange the letters in Joakim and you have Kojima, as in Hideo Kojima, the legendary creator of the Metal Gear franchise that debuted on the MSX Home Computer all the way back in 1987. The main protagonist of this Phantom Pain game looks, moves (yes, I’ve played a lot of Metal Gear, can you tell?), and acts like a Snake.
Solid Snake? Naked Snake? Liquid Snake? Some other Snake? Who knows? However, we’re here to go over what we do know. And based on what we’ve seen here at the VGAs, we pretty much know that this is our first look at a new Metal Gear title.
Much credit goes to the folks over at the NeoGaf forums who cracked the “Metal Gear Solid V” case which revealed the words hidden in the Phantom Pain logo’s negative space. It only took them a few minutes to figure this out. How long did you think this Phantom Pain business was going to stay Phantom Pain, Kojima?
Only teasing. You’re a trooper for trying, but Metal Gear fans will be Metal Gear fans. Another fun aspect of the trailer is certainly the horror element. What does this mean? Metal Gear has gone down the horror road before with boss fights like The Sorrow from MGS3 and ghost pictures in almost every installment of the game.
But this seems to be a much more direct approach complete with little girls creepily standing at the end of dark hallways, men bursting into flames, demon unicorns, and just an overall eerie appeal through the entirety of the trailer.
Whatever’s going on here, it seems to be something big. Who is our main character? Why is he missing his left arm? Did you see the white flower petals fluttering in the beginning of the trailer? Does this mean The Boss going to make a return? Are we in Vietnam? WWII? The future? Will this be the story of the assembly of the legendary Cobra Unit, or the fall of Frank Jaeger aka Gray Fox?
Some believe this is simply a marketing technique to get Ground Zeroes out there. But if so, why all the secrecy and blatant misdirection? It also looks like Colonel Volgin (Metal Gear Solid 3) is on fire for a brief moment in the hallway. Are these Big Boss flashbacks? Is that a banged up Frank Jager or Master Miller helping him around the facility?
It’s too early to tell, but never too early to speculate. Metal Gear has been and forever will be one of the gaming giants of storytelling and if this trailer is any indication, the team over at Kojima Productions (oops, I mean Moby Dick Studios) isn’t going to quit upholding that title any time soon."
