Due to my fierce Nintendo allegiance, I'm JUST now getting a PS2 so I got a shitload of catching up to do. Games that I have already beaten either elsewhere or on other platforms are games like GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas, Resident Evil 4 and Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, so I have a lot of wiggle room here. My main preferences are JRPGs, Action-adventure, Survival horror. Please no racing or sports games.

Dragon Warrior VII is on PS1. If you mean VIII, yeah I've already ordered it.

Survival Horror - i'd recommend Obscure. It's not the best game ever but it's a decent survival horror. It also has a sequel i haven't played. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ObsCure_%28video_game%29
RE Outbreak - both games.
007 Agent Under Fire and Nightfire.
Hitman Blood Money - if you haven't played it.
Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 are meant to be good.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is pretty decent.
I wanna take you for a ride: The Game aka MVC2
Metal Slug Anthology.
Sly Cooper Games.
Simpsons Road Rage i always enjoy.
Time Splitters.

Road Trip Adventure
Twisted Metal Black
Castlevania Lament of Innocence
Castlevania Curse of Darkness
Edit- I've played the second Obscure game, it's pretty fun two player action. Two other survival horror games I'd recommend are Rule of Rose and Haunting Ground. Also, Silent Hill Shattered Memories was great.

I would also only get this if you plan on getting a Guncon 2 at some point. The game suffers without it (I would rate Dead Aim a 5.5 without the Guncon and an 8 with it). Also if you're getting a Guncon, get Time Crisis 3.

I wish I had a CRT so I could play Time Crisis and Point Blank with my GunCon. Damn modern technology.

Since you're a Nintendo fan you'd want to pick up the unmentioned Contra: Shattered Soldier and Gradius V. Another unmentioned game that is the best music game ever made is Gitaroo-Man. Taiko Drum Master is pretty cool too though. Of course you're going to Mikami's Devil May Cry and God Hand for your action fix. Zone of the Enders 2 is also recommended. (Pick up Onimusha games on XBOX). For your curiosity in platformers that aren't Mario Klonoa 2 is recommended. Get Silent Hill 2 and 3, the rival games to Resident Evil series -- 4 is not a Silent Hill game but is weird enough to get I guess. If you have to pick up JRPGs pick up Shin Megami Tensei games (i.e. Nocturne). Try out Shadow Hearts and YS: VI (Action JRPG). Disgaea series scares me with lvls going over 100.
Ignore God of War series. Ignore Persona series. Ignore every Square Enix series. Ignore The Thing. Ignore 3D Castlevanias.

Hell just play both of them. Easily two of my favorite games on the system.
Other than that I love all the Ace Combat games on the PS2 and most of the things on Cam's list.

SH4 is definitely a departure. While there are some frustrating gameplay issues (the inventory system is a mess), it does some of the most interesting things in the series. in terms of narrative

Even though his post seems mostly troll-ish, there is one salient point:

I like them all, but Shadow Hearts: Covenant is my favorite.
I'll also be the third to recommend Steambot Chronicles and Shadow of the Colossus.
Primal and Metal Arms: Glitch in the System are pretty fun (and you can probably get them really cheap), and I like Armored Core 2, but the Armored Core games are kind of a love-it-or-hate-it type of game.
I think these are pretty fun, too: Disgaea 1&2, La Pucelle Tactics, Makai Kingdom, Grim Grimoire, Soul Nomad & the World Eaters.

Lots of good suggestions so far guys, thanks! And Vert's post was silly and trollish, but he has a point. I've played God of War 1 and 2 at a friends house and it was extremely generic, button mashy, and flat out boring. Not my style.

Before you write off racing games, try Stuntman or Stuntman: Ignition if you can find them cheap. I hate Gran Turismo games, but loved both Stuntman games.
