One day all your cd- and dvd-based games may be unplayable.
Optical discs deteriorate over time, even if stored properly (cool, dark & dry) or manufactured with care. Cd's you've burned yourself deteriorate rapidly: they have about 10 years on average. However, it's hard to find information on the longevity of factory-pressed discs - we've only had them for like 30 years. Some old audio cd's are known to suffer from disc rot.
Should we start making backups of our PS, Sega CD, Saturn etc. collections? The oldest game discs are already over 20 years old.

I don't think we'll have to worry anytime soon. My dad has CDs from the early 80s that still play.

Yeah, CDs last for quite awhile.
Not indefinitely, but longer than you'll ever live.
Anyone remember the gold plated CDs they used to make that supposedly NEVER deteriorate?

Eh if you store them properly and take care of them they should last a good long while, hell I've got precariously banacled stacks of loose CD's that get shuffeled against each other all the time and look pretty nasty that still play fine, one of em even has a crack.
I've noticed that computer game / video games discs seem to be a little more sensitive, but if you're that worried about it have a backup copy off Ebay or something that you never open, when and if catastrophe strikes and you can no longer play the game pop that new sucker out and bam you're good to go!
I need to do that with the disc from Mechwarrior II Mercenaries now that I think about it, my CD|DVD burner doesn't want to read the audio tracks anymore...

I know it won't work for our older games, but wouldn't having your games installed on your 360 or Ps3 help deal with this problem since it doesn't read the disc while it plays?

There's always the option of ghost mounting (or whateve the fudge macaroni it's called) an ISO of whatever game disc you're worrying about deteriorating while you game forver untouched by the ravages of time in your cryogenic pod, but then again there's ethical and legal considerations to well, consider, if you trod down that path.

Isn't making your own rips of disc media perfectly legal?

I dunno! If so you'd probably wanna do it before your discs crumble away.
