The whole thing was kind of a dick move and the employees shouldn't have reacted that way. Especially trying to rip something off which is attached and cannot be removed. Did they seriously think that if it was removed that he wouldn't press charges with the damage to his face?
What was more annoying was the comments on the article:

OH NOES MY FREEDOMS! Clearly this chump hasn't heard about privatisation of public space. Not to mention i can walk out onto the street with my camera, take a photo and if you are in it what are you going to do about it?

I get a feeling the article is highly misleading. Not only is it entirely one-sided, most of it is based upon Mann's blog. The actions don't make any sense at all, even in cases of hate crimes (which this is not), there's a point of harassment and intimidation. According to Mann, he was just eating, had no problems, and halfway through his meal all of a sudden three employees started trouble. That just doesn't happen. And at the end of the "article" it does say this guy has caused trouble before.
Here's my guess. Someone makes a comment about arrogant techguy's eyepiece. This starts an argument, and then a fight. Because of this, he's thrown out of the restaurant.

I think it has more to do with the fact that he looks like he's wearing a video camera on his face, and lots of restaurants and employees frown upon being videotaped randomly, especially the smelly french, apparently.

I think it's because he's got a cybernetic eye that let's him see perfectly but he still insists on parking in the handicapped spot.
