Don't worry, he'll die eventually. And then the Miami government will hold a parade.

Honestly, as far as world leaders go, Castro isn't that bad. He's certainly not as bad as a Kim Jong-il or Saddam Hussein or a Noriega or a Stalin. Fidel Castro turned to the style of government that he did, because at the time, it was the only option really available to him. He had overthrown the corrupt Batista government and liberated Cuba, but since the US had been in bed with the Batista government, the US refused to deal with him. So unable to get economic aid from the West, he turned to the only other super power that existed at the time: The Soviet Union. It was out of necessity that Cuba turned to communism.

Cuba's biggest problem is poverty and one has to wonder how much of that is Castro's fault and how much of that is the fault of the crippling trade embargos against Cuba that the US has sponsored for decades.

That still doesn't excuse the horrors he has commited against political dissenters, not to mention the numerous restrictions on freedom of speech, press, religion, and assembly.

Although, I feel that the embargo is hypocritical considering our relations with Communist China. The two policies are inconsistent.

I'm not saying that Castro is an ideal political ally by any means, but given our country's history of political pragmatism, I don't think there is any real benefit to fighting with him anymore. Central and South American have started to gain credibility on the international stage, and mincing words with Castro and Chavez is a waste of time when there are much scarier threats in the world, namely North Korea, Iran, and all sorts of terrorists. We can't fight everyone. Besides, the embargo has failed. The economic misery caused by the embargo has not starved out Castro's party... it is only starving out the average citizens, the very people we hoped it would cause to uprise. If anything, it has helped Castro cement his power.

That being said, I don't think we will ever see any easing up of Cuba-US relations, because it would upset Hispanic voters and politicians are too afraid of losing that voting bloc. You certainly won't see it from the Bush administration. The 2006 midterm elections have put the Republicans on the defensive and as a party that already does poorly with minority voters, there is absolutely no way they would try something like that.

You can't knock him completely as a leader. He may not be King Arthur, but he is not completely evil.

I remember watching a program a few years ago comparing the cost of health care, by them comparing the total costs in different countries for the exact same problem and treatment: A broken arm.

The total out of pocket cost for the US was over $3,000
Canada's total cost to patient was like $30
And, who came in first place?

Cuba. Total cost to patient = $0.00

Free healthcare is not the act of a evil dictator. You may not love Castro, and you may not agree with everything he does, but like Syd said, he did what was nessicary at the time to try to make life better for his people.

He's still bad though.

He's one of those guys that says "I'm not evil!" but he really is.

I don't know, it does take some intelligence to forge evidence for documentaries. Although, this board can't come to a consensus concerning the definition of "retard", so it's a moot point.
