Redmond (WA) - The recent addition of Mario Kart 64 to the Wii's Virtual Console digital download store showed what could be a big flaw in future releases to the Nintendo 64 channel, as technical problems prevented the implementation of part of the game's save mechanism.
In Mario Kart 64, while the main game data can be saved, the ghost rider feature, which allows players to essentially race against previous versions of themselves, has been scrapped, after it was deemed impossible to replicate on the built-in emulator on the Wii.
The weirdly configured N64 save packs led to emulation problems that have not yet been fixed, and according to Nintendo, will not soon be fixable for the Virtual Console.
It is a technical problem that only affects small portions of some N64 titles, but it could cause problems for Nintendo, and other game publishers, as they try to format the classic games for the Wii emulation hardware.
Nintendo said that an advisory notice has been posted on the Virtual Console, telling users about the problem, but when we checked the store this morning, there was no such notice to be found.

And this is again, my point. The only thing appealing to me about the Wii was the Virtual Console, and if that does work well, then I don't see the point. I would be most happy to be proven wrong. But to me, all it is, is a Gamecube with a gimmick controller.
The only must have game is Zelda, but it's the exact same (albeit mirrored) game as the Gamecube. And, from talking to people I hear Zelda is much better to play with the Gamecube controller.
So, my emulation console of choice, will be the one I am building:

I just need to afford the rest of the parts I need. Which will probably be when I get my tax return.

I've played Zelda with both a Wii controller and a GameCube controller, and I gotta say, I like the Wii controller better.

I needs me a fucking 360.
By the way, on an unrelated note, I just found out that I left my DS in sleep for about 5 days. Damn.

Or, for less than the cost of downloading it for XBox, you could buy it used and play it on a PSX. Or a PS2. Or a PS3.

I can't think of any N64 games where you really needed the memory card. Most games saved to the cartridge, which was, you know, the whole fucking point of using cartridges instead of CDs. That, and much faster loading times.
I can't save ghosts in Mario Kart 64? Big deal. The ghosts were fucking gay. No Mercy and WM2K both saved the CAWs to the cartridge, and that's all that really matters. Of course, No Mercy DID have that glitch where if you won career mode with a CAW, the game would erase all your saved data... that pretty much forced you to use the memcard as a back-up.

It didn't always work out that way, sadly. Gex 64, for example, needed a memory card, unless you wanted to write down an enormous string of characters for a password instead.

If Famicom Wars was the grandfather of console strategy games, MM is the grandmother. It's an awesome game (don't get me wrong) and like a game of modern chess in 2 player VS. but, it's the worst emulation of a PC engine game of the VC. When you scroll your view in a map, the game chugs with severe screen tearing and stuttering music, making it unplayable. It'll make you throw your Wii-mote at the Wii. You're better of emulating this game on a PC engine emulator like Ootake.

bullshit. gamestop is asking at least $20, and any comic shop or collector worth their salt won't give it to you cheap.
to top that, you have to find the damn game, which seems to be very impossible in my area.
now send me an Ebay link selling the game for cheap, and I'll tell you that still involves the hassle of bidding and contacting the seller and havign it mailed and shit, and not knowing the condition you'll get it in, as opposed to a quick cheap download.
and X box Live arcade games are like five bucks, and usually support surround sound of have HD support. granted, an old PSX game realyl can't look that good in HD normally, but SOTN is beautiful ,and the music deserves surround sound.
If you donwloaded the old super mario brothers for the virtual console, which I'm sure you did, you spent five bucks on a game you can get for seventy five cents, and it's pretty much a NES emulator, that is, the exact same game you palyed on NES, right down to only being able to pause it on the P1 controller.

I got my PSX copy of SOTN last year for about $6. I was awestruck when I found it and even more so when I saw the price sticker. Fuck if I can find Suikoden though.

I got a copy (CD-only) of Symphony of the Night a couple years ago at Gamestop, but it cost me about $20. Also snagged Suikoden at one time, but had to pay $29.99..

The fuck I did. I wouldn't pay more than $2 for a NES game or $5 for a SNES game, and that's less than the VC is charging for them. The only NES games I would buy for the VC at the current prices are Hogan's Alley and Duck Hunt, neither of which are currently being offered. Once the Wii gets its own DDR pad and World Class Track Meet becomes a VC possibility, I might buy that. WCTM kinda sucked, but it brings back some good memories.

I know the Turok games NEEDED a memory card unless you wanted to play the whole thing in one sitting O.O.

Protip: Play SOTN on ePSXe like I do. It's the exact same thing, with perfect audio and graphical emulation. Small problem though, if you played Aria of Sorrow first, you will feel like the entire game is a clunky piece of crap with stodgy movement (which it is, comparatively). Not saying the game wasn't good for its time, but it had severe flaws. I find even doing a backdash and jumping simultaneously to feel completely awful.

then you really aren't playing a perfect emulation. the original one was pretty much perfect with controls. I'm palying dawn of sorrow now, BTW.

this soul capturing system isn't very useful. I got three souls that I've been pretty much using for the entirety of the game, with a few exceptions here and there. the rest of them kind of sit around until I decide to graft them to a weapon, which I probably end up selling.

True enough. And while SOTN may be hard to find a legitimate copy of, you could always DL an ISO and make your own.

Didn't SOTN have a glitch where you could do Alucard's advanced moves before you learned them if you already knew the button combinations? I wonder if they'll fix that in the 360 version.
