Slug 3 is probably the best. It's a bit long, but that's fine because all the levels are pretty varied graphically and enemy-wise.

Metal Slug 6 is pretty cool. Graphically, it's really well done. The backgrounds look amazing. The Martians are back again too, which is always fun. They changed some of the voice overs, which is kinda weird at first. The POWs sound like old men now.
The Anthology has two continue modes for each of the Metal Slug games, limited continues and unlimited continues. Every time you beat one of the games with limited continues, you earn tokens that buy unlockable sound and music galleries. There are also two special galleries. In order to unlock the first special gallery, you need to beat every game on Easy with Limited continues. For Metal Slug 1-5 and X, you get 30 continues on Easy. For Metal Slug 6, you only get 15, which is significantly harder to pull off.
To unlock the second special gallery, you need to beat every game on Hard with limited continues. Not only is the difficulty upped, but you only get 10 continues in the first six Metal Slugs and 5 in MS6. It's RIDICULOUS.

Bullshit. Contra lacks style, and variety.

gimme a break.
contra was fast, action packed, and intense. that's exactly what a game like that should be.
you think anyone would play those gradius type of games if they weren't avoiding 43982390482390 bullets while shooting shit?

We'll disagree on this. I liked contra, but metal slug is just... better. I don't give if konami had a hand in it.

I wish that Metal Slug had a slide move with some invincibility time, then I could beat it no problem.

They're good for different reasons. Contra came first, and without it, Metal Slug may never have existed. Contra is also a more serious and some of the bosses in the series are truly creepy looking.
Metal Slug, on the other hand, is much less serious. The humor, the destructible backgrounds, and the presence of melee attack all make the Metal Slug series awesome. Oh, and the vehicles. I'd also argue that Metal Slug has a better score.
However, Contra has the Spread Gun which is probably the best run n' gun weapon ever. Some of the MS weapons, particularly the Drop Shot and Iron Lizard, suck pretty bad.

Slug 4 was my fave.
Growing up, I actully knew a kid who thought he invented the metal slug franchize. He wanted me to give him a quarter every time I thought of the game. It was like a bad real-life "fairly oddparents" scetch.

I would like 4 if they hadn't taken the only two characters I like out of it, the guy with the sunglasses and the blonde chick.

If you mean shoot 'em ups in general like that, I play bullet hell shooters.
I challenge you guys to this, a simple example. http://www.nextframe.jp/flash/fire2.html
But yeah, I agree with Syd's standpoint on this.. I play both games well. I just said "RIP Contra?" 'cause Konami ain't in the back making a new one, those bastards

If Contra was made into an FPS, and they didn't fuck it up, it would rule.
I happen to like both games

Z button for laser (only weapon). X to clear all bullets (works only once)

Metal Slug is a pretty fun, especially when it comes to blowing stuff up. Until the Wii compilation came out, I had never played a game in the series before.

The guy with the sunglasses is Tarma. He does have a cameo in the game, but it sucks he's not playable.
And actually, Metal Slug 4 is generally considered the "worst" game in the series because it's a lot more linear than Metal Slug 3 and some of the more interesting vehicles and enemies were taken out. Camel Slug, anyone?
And the MS4 end boss is a TOTAL rip-off of Dr. Wily. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing.
Personally, I think MS4 is a decent game, though probably not as good as its predecessors. My least favorite one is Metal Slug 5. The end boss was super gay.

My best memory of Metal Slug is when one of my friends and I played the hell out of a Metal Slug X machine at a really shitty arcade. Good times.
