It was public information back in December when New York Times president and CEO Janet Robinson was "stepping down," that she'd get $4.5 million to serve as a consultant to the company.
What we didn't know was that she only has to clock a maximum of 15 hours a month for that money, footnoted.com reports. That's the maximum. The minimum? Zero!
Robinson will get paid $375,000 a month, or $25,000 an hour, regardless of whether the Times calls her up for help or not. The Times Co. has been struggling with pension costs, a decline in print revenue and drops in ad revenue and circulation numbers. |
Makes sense to me.
Man, I wish I could be a fired CEO when I grow up. Nice to know my yearly salary is matched 8 times in a month.

Man I want her job. I'll take 25k an hour to sleep 10 hours a day and spend my time doing whatever the hell I want the other 14. Only problem I'd have was if they called me up, I'd probably be so wasted they'd have no idea what I was saying because if I'm making that kind of money for no effort I'll be sitting on a beach drinking margaritas 7 months out of the year.

Just another reason that newspapers are going the way of the dodo. Every time I see one of those kiosks outside a grocery store or whatever offering a paper subscription and they ask if I want one, I say, "No thanks, I have the Internet." That's where I get the news slants and opinions other people want me to read!

Maybe print media would survive longer if they didn't give $4.5 million to people who aren't working and put it back into the company.

This. Also, how else would they justify laying off several dozen staffers who make about that much combined? "Look, Jim, we know you've been here for twenty years, but Janet needs a new private island, and it's a little unfair to ask her to work for it when she's obviously done such a great job running this company in the first place."
