The Vita will have a really rough life if it can't even sell in japan. Hopefully this forces Sony to rethink a thing or two about it before western launch. It looks like a great handheld, but Sony needs a new policy with its first-parties were top teams also produce stuff for the handheld (and not farm it out as they do now), and they would also be wise to drop a few of their less interesting franchises for something new (I am thinking about Resistance in particular which is a waste of a talented developer imo).

As long as Sony can get exclusives from Atlus, Square Enix, and Capcom's Monster Hunter series, they'll sell enough units to justify existing.
But they don't have Mario, Mario Kart, or Pokemon, and because of that, they will probably always be a distant second in the handheld market.

At least we're seeing some promise in the Nintendo 3DS's future.

The first PSPs had a time pushing units until the PSP-2000 was released. We'll see.

Is the PSP even still alive anymore? It feels like it disappeared like 2 years ago. I also recall an instance where the PS2 was outselling the PS3.

Hell I'm pretty sure the PSP disappeared more like 4 years ago, that thing really never got much love from any publishers, and the DS was cheaper which pretty much killed it. The PS2 did outsell the PS3 for a while because the PS3's price was so fucking outrageous at launch no one in their right mind would have paid it. I know from working at Best Buy at the time that we sold a lot of the ones we had to older people with their new TVs because it was still cheaper than any Blu-Ray player on the market even with its high price tag.

PSP gets AWESOME fucking niche titles that piss me off that they're not on better platforms:
Final Fantasy IV: Complete
Persona remakes
Final Fantasy Dissidia
Symphony of the Night/Rondo of Blood remake
And probably other stuff I can't think of.

Yeah the one thing that almost made me buy one was Monster Hunter, but since they released it on Wii I no longer need to.

I got a PSP for the Rondo-remake, and I must say that it's a great complimentary handheld to the DS. Tons of great games for it, especially if you long for the time when japanese publishers dominated the console market.

Japanese publishers STILL dominate the console market as far as I'm concerned. I rarely buy non-Japanese games, especially ones that aren't made by NetherRealm Studios.

Yeah I prefer the japanese titles as well, but commercially and critically, the western studios have unfortunately surpassed Japan this gen.

I don't know about critically, probably commercially. Except Nintendo. Nintendo could slap the words "Mario Whatever" on an empty box and it would still sell a million copies somehow. IGN would give it an 8/10.

"Today Nintendo released 'Paper Mario 4: Bathroom of Terror'. Filled with harrowing adventures powered by latest in software, this game gives the player an intensely realistic yet fun filled and imaginative playing experience. In this sequel to the hit series, Mario must help defend the Mushroom Kingdom against Bowser after taking an insanely huge shit, but must be careful to avoid becoming toilet paper to the great evil king himself."
Or something like that.

That's mostly true, but not always, look at Mario Sport Mix that released this year to almost no fanfare and terrible reviews (although I guess the sales have been at least decent). Mario-games sell thanks to the brand of course, but also because they are quality games.

It got mediocre reviews, IIRC, not terrible ones.
