i never heard of this, but its a neat idea. basically, it tells the story between Sonic 1 & Sonic 2. when Sonic met Tails.
Quote:
Sonic's been racing through the brightly colored world of Mobius with Tails nipping at his heels for nearly twenty years now. Through it all, one mystery has remained... just how did he meet that little orange fox, anyway? The weekday cartoon series took a stab at an explanation, but it's a story that's never been told in any of the games. The developers at Sonic Worlds intend to rectify this oversight with the unofficial PC release "Sonic: Before the Sequel."

Before the Sequel rewinds the clock to late 1991, shortly after the events of Sonic the Hedgehog. A bright flash sends Sonic to the doorstep of Doctor Robotnik's towering Death Egg fortress, which happens to be a stone's throw from where Tails lives. After Sonic rescues the tyke from a couple of Robotnik's guards, Tails becomes infatuated with the blue blur, and begins his own quest to find him. Control switches from one character to the next after each three-stage level, a smart way to advance the narrative while keeping the action fresh.

The cut scenes that tell the story are cleverly repurposed from other Sonic games, but the actual game... well, that still needs work. It runs sluggishly on older PCs, especially during special effects like the downpour of rain in the first stage, and the stages are littered with sadistic traps guaranteed to rob you of your rings. The boss fights are borderline unsalvageable, putting the player in impossible situations and being needlessly stretched out, but... well, that could probably be said about the battles with Robotnik in the official games.

Sonic: Before the Sequel could benefit from some tweaking, but it's still an admirable effort, and may be worth a look for players who've already burned through Sega's unexpectedly brilliant Sonic Generations and Sonic Colors. If nothing else, it fills the gaps in the Sonic continuity that Sega has left agonizingly open for the last two decades. A demo is currently available from the Sonic: Before the Sequel web site, with a full release planned for the end of the year.

Non-pornographic interactive fanfic? Sounds better than the alternative, anyway.

They actually did explain how Tails met Sonic, sort of. He saw Sonic running by, was impressed, and started following, using his tails as a propeller to try and keep up. Sonic couldn't lose him, so he let him tag along.

I was, and still am, actually, under the impression that the four 8-bit titles take place between the first two 16-bit ones because those games all have only six Chaos Emeralds like in the original game. The second 8-bit game begins with Robotnik kidnapping Tails, despite Sonic's efforts to the contrary, and those shots of the two of them in action in each Zone take place after the game ends, as a sort of training exercise. Now, if you were to tell me that this game takes place after Triple Trouble (which I'm yet to play, incidentally) and before the second 16-bit title, I might buy that because in the last two 8-bit titles, Sonic and Tails each have their own separate, non-intersecting adventures.

Do timelines really matter that much? Zelda, then Kirby and now Sonic? We might as well start a Mario timeline discussion thread as well.

fuck a time line. i just thought this was a cool fan project.

and if you notice in the vids, Tails has two running animations: one thats similar to Sonic's, and another using his twin tails. according to the comments in one of the videos, they explain why the change. its all part of the story.

or something.

Wrecking Crew is the very last title in the Mario timeline. Everything that comes out now is explaining how he went from jumping barrels and flames in Donkey Kong to just breaking shit without the ability to jump (rumored to be an injury from a flagpole incident).

Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess, Bowser kidnaps princess,

Somewhere in there, they all found time to play soccer or some shit.
