EDIT:This could apply to the zombie apocalypse as well.

Let's say, for all intents and purposes that you are a paranoid bastard OR you value your personal property and/or life, very much so in fact, were you to hear something that suspiciously sounds like someone breaking into your domicile(which HAS happened to me once before), besides a phone, what is your object of choice that you've decided to grab and implement as a defensive tool (no Rambo bullshit, unless that's your thing) if proverbial shit hits the proverbial fan? Odds are it's going to be something close to you at that moment, if this is the case and you've planned accordingly what is this object? I'll Start:

At the moment I'm not in Chicago, but I would normally have a baseball bat as I play during the summer months so it would be nearby anyways, that or one of my assisted opening blades such as the SOG Aegis:

Corny Digi pattern I know

As I am not in Chicago, my options have become somewhat varied, in the city of Chicago it is illegal to possess a firearm at all, which they believe leads to fewer gun-related crimes. I for one disagree with this sentiment to an extent, as criminals, by definition, do not heed the word of the law...well that and the fact there were 500+ Homicides last year alone. As I do not have my shotgun here at the moment, I'll post a pic of my 1911 and Mr. Belvedere:

I would (well...do Confused ) keep one of these on my nightstand:

If I could pick any firearm to have in a pinch though, it would have to be a trusty M-4. The firearms I do own (30.06, 12-gauge and .22) are nice, but inaccessible in a split-second emergency since they're unloaded and locked in a gun safe.

A woman after my own heart. I sleep with a knife in my nightstand too. My guns are in lock boxes as well, but I always feel safe with my sleepytime friend.

You really don't seem like the type that would be a Fatboy Slim fan. I'm not, but I admit the video is awesome though.

My buddy's dad took a hunk of wood, hollowed it out, and filled it with lead. It's the greatest beating stick on Earth. It hurts like a bitch. That's my choice.

Actually, if I knew how to use one effectively, this would probably be my choice too. Great reach, excellent incapacitation potential and never runs out of ammo. The only challenge would be if a) you were stuck in a narrow hallway and couldn't make the best use of its arc, or b) if the material wasn't strong enough to hold up to a real fight. Good pick.

I have a billy club that would be pretty effective, if I could find it. Otherwise I'd have to go with the "chunk of metal in a sock"

Well, the idea seems to be improvised weapons that are realistic.

If I can keep whatever I'd like in my house, I'd probably use a spear.

I had a knife on my nightstand, which for some reason is now gone. I have a broom that can be a beating stick, and in a REAL pinch, I'd use my bass. That fucker's heavy.

I have some knowdeledge on fighting holds. This might be enough.
If I need a foreign object, I'd use my self-crafted pocket knife. Brass knuckes would be welcome too.
I wish dematerializing guns were real and cheap...

Sadly I can't find any videos of it because NBC are assholes, but this would be the perfect moment to post the SNL "Amazin' Lazer' skit...

Staffs are cool, but I don't have one of those, I DO however have a pair of Kamagong (ironwood) Escrima/Kali sticks, they're about 2.5ft long, there are generally two types, rattan sticks are flexible and cheap, and are used mainly for sparring/practice, then there are those like the ones below, made of a denser wood, mine are the kind they used to use in deathmatches, they can't import some of them(endangered woods or some crap) so I got them when I went to the Philippines (NOTE: the ones in the pic are not mine, just a reference):

Yo Thunder, you Southside or North Pole?

Because that makes a HUGE difference in Chicago.

Um...

If I really believe that there is someone who does not belong in my home first I'm locking the door, second I'm hiding my wife or helping her out a window or something. Third I'm getting my cell phone to call the cops. Fourth I'm meeting my wife outside.

If I am unsure though, and just "checking out what that noise was" I would probably bring a pillow. I don't generally have any weapon like objects in my bedroom. I mean, I could make one from just about anything, but not in 2 seconds. The pillow would be something quick to throw at someone so that they were off balance. I could either charge at them, run to another room, etc. They wouldn't know what I had and would look to block it instead of shooting me/stabbing me in the face for about 2 seconds.
