New York City got evacuated. And it was mandatory.
Well I've pinched my loaf, now pinch yours.

New York City was -not- evacuated. Just the low-lying areas that could be affected by storm surge. Huge difference.
I know a lot of us (including myself) are in the path of this thing. Stay safe and don't do anything stupid. It's not a strong storm wind-speed wise, but it is fucking HUGE.

My friend is at Princeton and obviously we don't get hurricanes in Ireland so he was freaking out a bit.
I consoled him cause by the time it reaches New Jersey it will be a Tropical Storm or at the worst Category 1, wee buns.
I don't see why NYC was evacuated tropical storms aren't that bad.
EDIT: With the wind speeds from a tropical storm you'd be lucky if a storm surge was 5ft. That's really quite small but evacuation i guess is for the best.

I'm up in a valley in the middle of...whatever mountains I live in, so I shouldn't be affected too much. However the garage sale we were having this weekend was cut by one day.

Tropical storms can still do quite a bit of damage. And a 5 foot storm surge is pretty significant, more than enough to flood the areas that were evacuated in NYC. Coastal areas on the east coast of the US are generally flat and low-lying. It's not gonna be a huge deal inland, though.
And not only is this storm expected to remain a hurricane up until it hits the East Coast, but the storm is MUCH stronger than the Saffir-Simpson scale measures it (it only measures maximum sustained wind speed), The barometric pressure is on par with a Category 3, and it's absolutely freaking huge in size.

I live about two thousand miles from the Pacific or Atlantic Oceans so the most I'll get is a lot of rain. I hope for the best for all you... :/

We really dodged a bullet here in Jacksonville, FL.
Been through Hurricanes my whole life, and lived in Cape Coral, FL when Cat 4 borderline Cat 5 Hurricane Charley's eye went about 30 mile above my house back in 2004, luckly the storm crossed over Captiva Island first, which absorbed most of the storm surge, although it did cut the island in half and create the now "Charley's Pass".
Hurricanes aren't that bad as long as you properly prepare, live somewhere that is Hurricane Coded properly for the Storm that is coming (our house was rated for a 4 at the time), follow evacuation orders, and have the proper insurance.
I always stock up when the season kicks off, storm or not, Bottles of water aren't going to expire anytime soon. Canned goods last usually for a year or two if not longer. The reason why I do that, is because as soon as a storm is going your way, good luck getting supplies or gas. People go into a crazed frenzy and buy up everything.
If you aren't boarding your windows up, run duct tape across them so if they shatter, it holds the glass together instead of dumping it everywhere.
tl;dr
Really best thing you can do is prepare, and stay aware of the storm. If you're ordered to evacuate. Do it.

I live outside of Philly. Thus far just some heavy rains. They're saying the worst will come overnight. My condo complex just put on a new roof yesterday.....guess we'll be testing that sucker out.

Category 1 is still a category. Don't go to Twitter if you know this already.
That said, Virginia Beach has been relatively uneventful. It reminds me of Isabella, in which not only was nothing here destroyed save for a few trees that didn't break anything of value, but the power was only out for five days.

This storm may not be a record breaker for its wind, but it is a 24-36 hour hit.
Be prepared for the very long storm and an absolutely ridiculous amount of rain.
I drained my pool so it is 13 inches from the lip... I am fearing that isn't enough.

You own a pool? I knew there was a reason I hated you. Now I know what it is.
Anyways, yeah. I really don't think we're gonna see widespread devastation, though the fact that it's hitting New York City means there's a lot of stuff to damage. But for the most part, it's gonna be a few days without power and I don't think anyone is getting any sleep tonight, at least I'm not.

I heard that Virginia and Maryland have lost power.
That was a while ago though.

I'm in the western part of the state of Virginia and we probably won't even be affected by this beast other than some rain. We almost certainly won't lose power either.
West Virginia is slightly bigger than Ireland, so imagine your whole country losing power all at once. That shit doesn't happen very often.

Nothing but intense humidity and slight downpour in central PA. My sister's right by the water in Brooklyn, though. Little worried about that.

Apparently it's two hours until the strongest part gets to where I am on Long Island. I was just outside enjoying the wind, which is around 35-50mph gusts right now. I will probably take a drive down to the ocean (2 minutes away) in a couple of hours to check it out.

CT is getting hammered right now and it is going to intensify for the next 5 hours.
My trees have been ok so far. One large sumac was taken out (yay, one less to chop down!) and one medium sized Norway maple split in half.... holy shit.
I slept like shit last night from all the wind.

We have a nice little river running down the street (we live on a hill), but that's about it so far. It's down to a Tropical Storm now.

Ok, I laughed right out loud.
More seriously, from the comments I've read, it doesn't seem to be affecting everyone too seriously, which I'm thankful for. Good luck guys.
