So yeah, 5.8 earthquake 87 miles south of D.C.. I felt it here, and supposedly so did NY and NC. I think Andrew lives around the epicenter, and maybe woodzy. Here's hoping they're OK.

I am 350 miles away and was on the 4th floor of a 6 story building. My chair began to gyrate. Very odd sensation.

Welcome to What California Does For Fun, guys.
Seriously though, glad everyone's ok. Quakes that get up into the 6s are not fun to sit through.

I definitely felt it where I am on eastern Long Island in New York. It felt like a gentle rolling back and forth.

My hometown of Winchester, VA probably felt it. I didn't - I was in Berkeley Springs.

I live in the DC area and felt it big time, the ground began to vibrate as all cell phone coverage disappeared. I dipped the fuck out of the school i was in as the windows and doors began to shake, got out, and chilled outside until i got picked up, very interesting day indeed

LOL, exactly what you are not supposed to do in an earthquake. you should always stay inside a building as there may be the danger of fallen power lines or bricks/other parts of the building falling down onto the sidewalk/street below. You got lucky that that did not happen where you were.

While I don't dispute that you're supposed to stay in the building as per official guidelines, wouldn't it make more sense to get out of the building AND escape to an open area away from power lines? I'm guessing it'd be a lot easier out where I live, but still.

Felt it at school and people (including me) were wondering if feeling the desks move around meant they were around to faint
My teacher was standing up and didn't feel it at all. 5.8 that strong an earthquake anyway, though it's enough to really freak out when you see everything shake like hell.

Mineral, VA, is 15 miles away from my house. I felt the shaking, thought my wife put an uneven load of laundry in the washer. Then it got worse and shook for about 60 seconds. Grabbed the babies and stood in the doorway. Still feeling a few small aftershocks. Fun!

I'm literally the only person in Virginia Beach who missed out on it.
I mean, even if I did, after hearing about an 8.9 for months on end, how are you supposed to top that?

If the East Coast starts to seriously shake we're going to have a lot of damage. I can't name 1 city on this side of the States that has buildings designed for earthquakes.
Hurricanes? Of course, we get hit by them daily. When it comes from below the entire coast isn't just underprepared, we haven't prepared!

It was a weird sensation indeed. Hearing the rumbling coming down the mountains, I thought it was just Air Force jets doing maneuvers again. You could hear a deep rumbling for about 30 seconds, then all of the sudden a giant boom as a bunch of transformers got blown on the power lines, then a good minute of shakiness. After that it was dead still and dead silent.
Freaky shit for being in fucking Virginia. Go back and bother the people dumb enough to stay in common natural disaster areas, earthquake!

Luckily, I'm in a state pretty sheltered from natural disasters of all kinds (save a water shortage), but I'm worried about my Mom being back in FL with the approach of Irene. Glad to see everyone made it through unscathed.
